Just wondering the legalities of hunting kangaroos and emus. Assuming that they are on private property and a pest to the land owner and permission has been given to shoot on that land.

Even on private property they are protected in WA. Kangaroos can be culled by obtaining a damage permit from thr relavent govt dept. A proffesional shooter can then tag them and sell the carcases. Land owners doing the job themselves have to leave the carcases. Emus are probably treated similarly. It basically comes back to a numbers game with both. If you can prove you have high numbers and they are doing damage. The dept often come out and check. So a couple of roos in the back paddock isn't going to get you a permit.
Plenty are obviously shot without permits but the fines and you will lose your licence and guns make it a risky proposition. Be very careful in the area you live as all you need is to be dobbed in and things could get ugly.
I hope you didn't put on your licence application that you planned to shoot roos and emus. Best bet is list rabbits, foxes and feral cats. Feral pigs and goats are good for high power but they will want letters from property owners with them, and often check.

Sadly on one of my family's properties both are doing some serious damage- especially emus to the fences and to a lesser extent the kangaroos to the availabiltiy of feed for livestock. Roos are being taken care of by the pros which is fine by me.

Both my main shooting properties have a healthy fox and rabbit population.

If you're licence also includes target shooting put "Target shooting" on your reason for purchase of big bores.
Things must be bad in WA for them to be doing that sort of stuff to you.

I'm not sure if its still the case. But in the past (pre Port Arthur) if you put target shooting you would have to prove membership of a club and if you couldn't provide letters from property owners. Then you would be restricted to club use only. So no shooting off the range. You also often found that if you could only supply letters from one or two property owners that you would be restricted to only shooting on those properties. This was all noted on your licence. Recently this seems to have eased off a bit as I have provided letters for a couple of blokes and they haven't had restrictions placed on them. A lot depends on the police officer handling the application. Give them a hard time and you'll get one back and I have had a phone call from the police checking that I actually wrote the letter.
So its all fun and games over here in the wild west.

Iwat, I put "target shooting" AND "humane destruction of large vertibrate feral animals etc. foxes, goats, pigs" on all of my centerfire Permit To Acquire applications.
That way you can have your cake and eat it.
Besides, most of the properties I hunt on would say they see the odd goat so I could get a big bore.
The firearms registry did themselves a disservice here in NSW and did some stuff that was not really above board.
It was taken to the Police Minister and to the Administrative Appeals Tribunals and overturned so they're being nice.
Additionally, the SSAA is getting political again as you probably know and as the biggest sport shooting organisation in Oz they have considerable clout.

That's great to hear actually, looks like I'll be joining at a good time - I intend on getting the other half involved also as she wants to target shoot. I believe there needs to be allot more forceful protest by the National Shooting associations regarding the inane laws for gun ownership in this country - sadly we layed down all too easily after Port Arthur and just let them have their way.

Do a google search ... the guy that Croc Dundee was based on, not Paul Hogan but the REAL Croc hunter in the NT - he was a famous guy and they awarded him Aussie of the year or something back in the early 90's because of his fame and the tourism he brought in etc ... after Port Arthur the cops went in without notice to try and seize his weapons and he resisted ( so they say ... ) and he ended up being shot dead. Interesting that it never got into the papers or TV but it's news you can still find on the internet to this day.

Interestingly the inside story is that the cops were after him for his unregistered weapons which he didn't feel he needed to surrender - not that other story by CBS.
