Went shopping at Dick's today and saw they had the 336A on sale for $299. It included a weaver base, cheap 3X9 scope (won't use) and a hammer extension. Two of them followed me home. I plan on using mine as a backup to the .357 revolver for deer hunting this year. The second one is for my son so he can have a scoped rifle this year.

TooTall that is a good buy on a good rifle. I got one in 03 at Dicks as well, same set up as yours. here is how she shoots at 100yds with 150 grain Fed Fusions. The larger group that is higher was with the 160gr Hornady LeverEvolution. Hope that you and your son enjoy your rifles as much as I do mine.

Good gun, fair deal. Learn to handload, if you dont already, and you'll get all you can from the .30-30.

But Im curious. Why call the 336 a "backup" to your .357 Mag? For my money, I'd turn the tables...

I second that.
For hunting, I would like to have my 336 as my primery gun. Look at your results...brilliant!
Not really possible with your 357 at 100 yards...

The .357 is for the less than 50 yard shot and the 30-30 is for anything over 50 or any larger buck.

SUrely you know the .30-30 can be fired at targets inside of 50 yards, as well as at longer ranges
(I have never seen the need to carry more than one hunting arm afield).
Inside of fifty yards, that is at close range, just shuffling things around to select one weapon over the other might see your game shuffling itself off in a hurry.
