Hi guys, I have a Remington 870 express which has a 4 shell capacity. The problem is, here in TN, the law is that for hunting migratory birds, any shotgun capable of holding more than 3 shells is illegal unless it is plugged to where it can only hold 3 and can only be removed when the gun is disassembled. Where do I get one of these plugs or fillers? And how do I go about putting it in? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with the 870, it's either a wood dowl inserted behind the spring -not allowing more than two in the magazine or a metal rod supplied with the gun from the factory- Might want to ask Remington what they suggest! My A5 didn't have one with it when I bought it used so I made one out of and old arrow- slipped it down the hole at the top of the magazine tube! If you make one just be dang sure no more than two fit in the mag as the old game warden will not give you any slack!! ;)

rrb32 Welcome to the forum, rules are simple, be nice and join in.

Most sporting goods stores, such as Sportsman's Warehouse, Cabala's and Shooters supply have a plastic plug designed for the remington 870 that will take care of your problem. I've even seen them in the gun section of Walmart if you still have a Walmart that has a gun section. If you can't find one locally check Midway, they have them also.

Remington used to include them with the guns. Might call them; they may send one.

I've made them myself out of a variety of things... sometimes a stick, when I found myself out hunting and had forgotten to insert the plug!

If you take the cap off that holds the barrel, there should be a hole through the collar and you can just drop a stick down in there, worst case. It can't be removed unless the cap is taken off, and you can't (well, shouldn't!) be firing the gun like that.

Don't take the collar off in the field, unless you want to chase the spring when it shoots out the end of the tube.

If you are working with a Magnum or Super Magnum reciever check your work with both magnum and standard 2 3/4" shells.

It is possible to cut the plug so that only 2-3 1/2" shells go into the magazine...but.....3 - 2 3/4" shells will fit in the tube, rendering your gun illegal if you have the short ammo in your pocket.

I learned the hard way :(
