Hello All,
I am new here, so hello.

My wife's grandfather recently passed away leaving us a Double-Nine western style .22 revolver and a Winchester model 94 30-30. Based on the serial number it was manufactured somewhere around 1947-1948, there is no additional information from the factory. The rifle appears to be in excellent working order and I am considering letting my oldest son use it dear hunting.

Is this a rifle that is a shooter or is it something of value that should just be locked up and cleaned once in awhile?

Unless it is a limited edition, just shoot the thing. Winchester made gazillions of 94s over the last 110+ years, so they are not really going to go up in value. Put it to its intended use by putting venison on the table.

Welcome to the forum BSDGuyShawn.

If your 94 is like new or has some special factory stocks or engraving you might want to get appraised before doing anything.

If it is an everyday 94 with some blueing wear and a stock that looks like it's been used the follow rt's advice and use it for what it's ment to be used for.

Thanks guys. That is what I was hoping for, I just wanted to make sure I was not planning on doing something stupid.

It is a thing of value, but not necessarily a prime collectible unless it was a special order or fancied up in some way. Its main value would be as an heirloom and shooter, assuming it is a standard production rifle showing use but no abuse. If that's the case, I'd use it, enjoy it, take care of it, and eventually pass it on down.

You know, I own a few firearms, some bought new others used. Some costly Colt saa . But at this age (69) I don't think it's time to collect for the futures' possible increase in value. Ha! Anyhow I just can't and never been able to not shoot one. If It works I shooit,. If it dosen't I get rid of it or fix it.
I even owned a 4 number S/N Colt SAA once, Looked fair to poor , all the right parts except the grips and the barrel had been shortened. But it would have cost me big bucks ( after having it apprased ) to fix it up to safely shoot it. Traded it for a brand new one. Probaly worth a lot more ,But I was happy. That's the name of the game!
I buys them to shoot.
Just my .02 cents.............................MUTT :D
