Can anyone give me a bit of perspective on the 500 S&W ? Usefullness, caliber comparisons, ect. I've been interested in getting a levergun chambered for this caliber, and am interested in any useful information. Thanks.

I'd like to find a Winchester 92 clone in 50 S&W.
Shoot one of the big Smiths a couple weeks ago. My ego would not allow me to turn down the opportunity, This Smith had a wonderful comp on it, recoil was almost pleasant. Accuracy was incrediable, hitting a steel gong at 100 yards four our of five shoots off hand.

Don't look for a lever gun in .500 S&W anytime soon. You must remember that this cartridge runs over 50,000 PSI chamber pressure which is well above the limits of most lever actions. Puma, (Rossi), makes a lever action in .454 Casull, but it is on a very beefed up action. I'm not saying it can't be done however it would take a completely reengineered firearm to accept it. Bill T.
I have a .500 PC Hunter. It is fun to shoot. A companion rifle would be very nice. An Alaskan outfit is showing photos of a prototype. I hope it makes it to production. It is like a Marlin 1895 .45-70 on steroids. They are talking price in neighborhood of $1500. We shall see.

500S&W lever action? How about a 50 Alaskan lever action! Gary Reeder makes conversions for the Marlin levers to that 50 Alaskan. That is a true .510 caliber and will throw some seriously heavy bullets. The conversion costs around $1500 on top of your base rifle cost. So its not cheap and ammo is only made by a couple of companies. Its cool though!

I shot the 500 in a 4 in. I was impressed by the lack of recoil!!! It was fun and easy to shoot. I am an avid shooter of both handguns and long guns but have never been fond of the 'big' hand guns. Granted this is a 'big' heavy gun but it was plesent to shoot. I have shot the super light 44 Mags and they plain hurt. I have the 45-70 so I don't need the 500 in a lever, it would be a nice option to have for close up hard hitting jobs though!!!

I love my 4" 500 S&W. As far as cartridges, go I think the 460 S&W is more usefull unless you just plain want to throw a LARGE piece of lead. I bought my 500 as they did not make a short 460 yet and I DO want to thrown large lead pieces with it.
The idea of a 500 S&W rifle has merit, look at the T/C camp. But given I have a 45/70 I feel no need for a different large bore lever gun. I know, what does NEED have to do with anything about your next gun?
Anyway, it would be a killer. Tube should hold many rds, lets see at 500 grains each, that would be..........
