Well, it's been a while since I've been able to think about buying a new rifle, but I finally decided.
Going to get a .44 mag 1894 as soon as I can afford it, but I'm not decided between the blued model, or the stainless. Anyone have a problem with galling on the stainless models?
Thanks for the input.

I've had an SS 1894 for 4 years now. Over 1000 rounds through it. No problems so far.

I think there's a sticky in MarlinOwnersForum about polishing the action a bit and how to prevent/cure "the Marlin jam." I did that to mine before I had any problems and it improved the smoothness of the action and the trigger pull.

Cool, thanks for the info. They still have MarlinOwnersForum up and running? I haven't been on the computer now for over a year and had to get rid of all my firearms because of the messy big 'D', so it's nice to know SOME things are still the same.
May just get myself the stainless then. Only had one stainless rifle up till now, and that one gouged terribly anytime something touch it it seemed. Treated it the same as my other firearms, and not a mark on them, but that one rifle seemed to 'soak up' the scratches and dings.

I am Curious though ..... I've been told that because of the factory twist rate these rifles don't like the big heavy bullets. Is this true?

I can't answer you about the twist rate. I've only used factory 240grs. loads, which allowed for a 2.19" 5-shot group at 100 yards. With a 4X scope and rested on the front. Check out Ranch Dog's
postal match in this leverguns section.

There's a sticky in this forums Gunsmithing section on an 1894 trigger job. I think the one on MarlinOwnersForum got lost.

Well, now that I FINALLY decided I'm getting the 'stir crazies' waiting to be able to get the thing! It's still going to be a little while, while I get a 'few things in order ..... but there are a few years worth of ideas just waiting for that little rifle :D

I am considering the 1894ss .44 mag also, what is a good price for it? Going to the gun show in Oct here in Houston.

Anything up to 300 grains should shoot just fine. The Buf Bore 290's are great out of my old 1976 pawn shop/project gun.
