View Full Version : Shooting Ranges
I am teaching the rifle shooting merit badge to a scout group in Dallas , NC, I am a certified instructor thru the NRA in the disciplines of rifle and shotgun. I have tried for a month to find a place to take these scouts to shoot so they can qualify for the merit badge , but cannot find any where to accomodate us. Is there anywhere Im overlooking , around me that wont cost an arm and a leg to take these boys to shoot.... it is a shame we dont have more places available for such events. Thanks for all your help.....PHil

Phil, check with your local National Guard Armory. I have used the one here in North Little Rock for training in the past. Also check with your Local Police Departments, sometimes they will allow the use of the Department ranges in support of good causes.

Also check with your State Game and Fish. Ours has a supervised range, with a nominal range fee of $3.00 per head. The only problem is the distance. 20 miles one way. It is quite busy just before hunting season, but usually not bad the rest of the year.

What happened to ranges at Boy Scout camps? If you can't find a range, contact CMP, they should be able to help!!
http://www.odcmp.org/0906/default.asp
If you need more help, Please ask!!! We Will find you a place to shoot, or I will. 50ft prone, .22lr, correct? JP
Many years ago most H.S. in N.Y. had them, indoor! A Sad world!
I prefer the benchrest position for the young scouts starting out... I need to make sure they all qualify...... hopefully. Yes 50ft , 22lr . /// Scout camps usually dont allow the ranges to be opened up during off seasons....... while camp is not going on..... but will try that too....about 100miles away tho?
I will try the suggestions you all made.... THanks for all your help... Phil

Once a month, your Council should have a Round Table meeting. Every unit in the council is supposed to send a rep. Look at your council calendar. Go to a Round Table, and ask for a minute to make an announcement. Ask the reps to check with their units' leadership and see whether anyone can supply you with a lead on a location.
While you're at it, offer your services to them to put on a shooting nite as a meeting activity. You don't have to do a full Merit Badge class - just get the boys out for a nite of shooting.
