Been dreaming 'bout one of these since I was a kid. Going to get one as soon as I can after my centerfire lever-action, so I am curious as to the average prices of these new. Thanks, Tim

Wal-mart used to have them but they are not listed on their website anymore. They are getting out of the gun selling. One of the managers in my local store said they think "it's too much trouble". I think they had them listed for about $380. You might check your local Wal-mart and see if they still have one in the gunrack if they have not remodeled yet. If not, check with the local gunshop.

I haven't priced new ones, but around here decent used ones -- and even not-so-decent -- tend to start at around $300. I lucked out a year back and found one on Gunbroker for $235, missing an easily-replaced buttplate and a forend tip screw but otherwise in excellent shape.

I was deraming about one too, when I was a kid. At about 18, I bought an Article II 39A. It has been a constant compantion since. It has always been accurate and reliable. I put a scope on it, but it ruined the handling qualities. I took it back off and all was good.

I recently bought an 1897 Cowboy, which is actually quite similar. I will never get the use out of it that I have the Article II, but I willl find a good home for it someday. Always liked the longer barrels. Can't say enough good about them. They are in a class all by themselves.

The first rifle I bought was a Marlin 39A. In 1963 it cost about $70. Last year I bought a used Marlin 39M that was made in 1969. It cost $300. I think that is pretty much the going rate these days. The Mountie is actually more accurate then my old 39A.

I really think they should bring back the Mountie. The .22 really doesn't need those long barrels, and the Mounties seem to be what everyone's looking for. I'd LOVE to get my hands on a new made one, if they brought them back.................................

I am also surprised that of the 2 configurations, the longer barrel is the one that survived.

When I bought my first, my big question was long or short. My friends had long, so I went with that. I am glad I found a short, even if it was 40 yrs. later.

I'll have one one day. It'd just be nice to see a Mountie type back in production, along with an 20" variant.....along with a Cowboy model....that would be a bit o heaven imho. A bit of a pipe dream perhaps, but a nice thought none the less :D.

My Cowboy Marlins are both 24". That has a little more inertia than I need and slows down acquisition of targets. I like them anyway. They both have straight grips. I find the pistol grip of the 39A now feels awkward to me. The pistol grip works for deliberate fire, but no longer works for rapid fire. I find I am currently more comfortable with the straight grip of the Mountie.
