Can the more informed ease my concern, I was given a box of FEDERAL 44 Smith & Wesson Special, 200 Grain Semi W C Hollow Point ammo. My gift giver assures me I can safely fire these in my 44 Mag rifle. The cases on these S&W are shorter than the Rem 44 Factory ammo. Thanks for your time

They probably won't be very accurate, but they are perfectly safe.

44 Special and 44 mags are interchangable in handguns, don't see why they wouldn't be in a rifle. Doubt they would cycle the action in the old Ruger semi-autos though.

Proably not going to be a problem (excpet for semi-autos, as mentioned). Rifles don't really know where the case ends...are "timed" to work with cartridges of a certain length, so if those .44 specail loads are about the same over all length as .44mag. loads, they'll generally work.

(even though the case is shorter, can seat more bullet out and end up at nearly the same OAL. Believe it or not, the basic 246RNL .44special is loaded to about 1.57"...and your basic 240gr. JHP .44mag. load comes in at about 1.59"...the .002" difference isn't enough to matter.)

that SWC edge might be a problem...might now...have to try it to find out. But even if they require you to load them one-at-a-time into the chamber, there is no harm in shooting them (and they just might shoot very well....never know until you try).
