Normal is to line up the dots placing the point of aim on top of the center dot. Personally, I don't like FO's at all for hunting because they are very difficult to get a precise point of aim with. I do like them shooting fast pace target like steel plate & bowling pins but hate them for hunting. Another thing is that in bright sunlight trying to get a good point of aim on a shiny deer hide also in the sun is almost impossible, everything tends to blur together. Now, there are some people who swear by FO's for hunting but I'm not one of them, pretty much comes down to a personal things, either they will work for you or they won't. Cut a piece of plywood or drywall about the size of a deer, paint it light gloss brown and shoot it to see if you can consistently hit where you want to every time.

Me, I like a Cu front blade and a black rear notch for hunting and slow fire target.
