I have heard that you can shoot .41 colt out of a .410 shotgun. Is this true, and does this apply to specific weapons, or any .410 shotgun?

Nope...you can't. The .430" rim (give or take a little bit, .41LC's aren't all that exact) would fall deep into a .410's chamber.

Have read of old-timers shooting .41LC in a 38-55...and I tired it, there is just enough rim to catch the chamber. Normally driving an oversized bullet into an undersized bore is a big no-no, but pressures are so low you can get away with this follishness (and it is foolishness...accuuracy is ziltch and the chamber AND bore get leaded badly).

I would definitly not recommend it, as the bore of a .410 shotgun is .410inches, that plus the thickness of the case, ends up with a case head of .470 inches. while the bullet fron the .41 colt is only .386 inches in diameter and the case is only .407 inches in diameter, that is a lot of expansion for the .41 Colt case, which would end up splitting the cases and releasing a lot of hot gas back into your face. That would be like shooting a .41 Magnum in a .444 Marlin chamber.

There is at least one derringer out there that will shoot .410 shotshells and .45 Colt.

Why?....why would anyone want to chamber a round in a firearm when they know it is not correct!...thats the kinda stuff that makes accidents and news...and personally i dont like that kinda news...stick to the rules!

Doesn't Magnum Research make a .45 LC/.410 revolver?

All the .410/.45 combo's I've seen were total crap. If the bore is rifled, it won't shoot shot patterns for crap and bullets ain't worth crap from an oversized smoothbore.

I'm with Thomas, use the right ammo in the right gun.

What I'd like to see is a realistic slug for a cylinder bore 2.5" .410.

Despite the groves & hype, Fosters don't spin anyway, so why wouldn't a .408 or .409 nose-heavy Hollow Base WFN loaded to an OAL of 2.45" or so in a .444 or cut-down .410 brass case work?

Keep the pressures reasonable, but I really can't see why you shouldn't be able to get a 180gr custom slug to perform more like a .40s&w rather than a 38-40.

Dixie Slugs has received various emails on this subject, so someone is interested out there.
As I have answered in various email, the .410 suffers from the same problem that other gauges with choked barrels do.....soft and/or undersize slugs.
In true .410" cylinder barrels, it would be no problen to design a full bore .410" hollowbase slug weighing around 325 grs (3" shell) and 215 grs (2 1/2" shell). These would about match/exceed the shot load velocities. The design should have a truncated nose with at least a 75% meplat and the hollow should be about 2/3 deep in th base.
Some shooter/hunters might would want more velocity, but considering the range use.....the extra weight would be better.
If you are serious about a mold, talk to Steve at Victory Molds. Dixie uses his lathe turned mold for our production molds.

What should I use to slug the bore? I'm fairly certain that my Win 9410 is a Cylinder Bore (this is not the invector choke variant).
