Hi
I´m new to this forum and I want to join after purchase a used Winchester 94. Its about thirty years old what I can see of the factorynumber. Its a 30-30, I mount a Leopold-scope on it and just shot tree bullets in a cirkel from a swedish five crown-coin from 80 meter. That about 90 yard
I think. Not bad for such an old gun.
I send a pic of the gun that I hope will help me to trap a lot of deer.
Sorry for my bad english!

Welcome forester. Sounds like a good buy to me. Don't worry about your english, Even those of us who were borne to it still murder it, both in it's usage and in it's spelling.

The 30-30 cartridge has been taking deer in this country for more than 100 years, and probably will continue to do so for a good many more.

Best of luck with your purchase and may you have many successful hunts with it.

Here in Ontario Canada the moose hunt is on , depending what section of the provance you live. If your able to go north and trvel down as the weeks go you could hunt moose for three weeks. Many of the animals have been shot with the 303 british in the past and also with the 30/30 at moderate range. The 30/30 was king here in the deer and bear woods.

Our season starts on the 16 th of this month and I will be in the bush with my new 3006 Tikka Battue.

Have fun.

forester,

Winchester M94 rifles are selling at a premium here in the USA now because of the USRAC plant closing. Has the same happened in your part of the world?

Did you mount the Leupold scope with a side mount scope, or a scout type set-up (scope mount out at the rear sight position)?

Welcome to the group; and don't worry about your English - it's much better than our Swedish!

Hi Pilgrim

I´ve read about the plant but I dont realy think its gonna make some trouble here. Whinchester leverguns is no big deal in Sweden. We are only a few fans of that wonderful gun.
With my Leopold 4x its my best friend in the woods.

Hi Snippe
I´m suprised yue use the 30-30 for mose. You cant do that in Sweden. Here 30-30 is a so called class 2 gun. Its only for deer, fox and other small games.
For mose I use a 3006 Remington.
Last year I shot a big mose (for Sweden) with ten "taggar" as we call it.

Good hunting Snippe

Hi Frank

I haver mounted my Leopold (4x) as a side mount and it works perfect.
Do you use your Wincherster for targetshooting or do you hunt in other places in the states?

The only moose I ever shot was with my 1894 30-30. But it is definately a bit on the light side for such work.

Hello all. I hope you don't mind if I chime in here as I am also new to this forum and just picked up 3 new rifles one of which is a Winchester 94 30-30 classic with a 26" octagonal barrel. From the serial number I am told it is a '68 or '69. I won't be using this rifle much as it is more of a collectors model and don't wish to mar the gold receiver more than I have to.

The 30/30 is indeeed light for moose. My friend shot a cow and calf and it took the tube to do it . they were all broad shots and he was using my reloads that were strong.
With a light gun you need to place your shots. I would think in Sweden and Finland with the 6.5 x55 shots would also be carefully placed . I doubt I would tackle a bull straight on.

I agree with you. I have used the 6,5x55, besides my 30-06, for moose hunting since a long time but for sure its to weak. You must be careful where you place the shot.
Here in Sweden the government concider to forbid the calibre for moose.
By the way. I shot a calf last weekend.

Well good for you . I hope you enjoy your meat. We were out in the rain almost all week and were after a cow and calf that was in our hunting area. She knew what we were going and managed to avoid not only the men on wait, but finally also the dogger ( the man trying to chase her out )
I used my model 38 Husquaria last year, and hit a bull on the front shoulder joint with a 160 Round nose 6.5. He took off like a freight train through the bush and was later seen going through a long swamp . Guess the bullet gave him a good sting, but did not hit a vital organ. It might have bounced off the leg bone as all we found was some hair . I was advised I should have used a premium 140 gr.

This year I was using a Tikka Battue in 3006. I really like this rifle and find it about perfect for the bush we hunt in. The rifle is easy to get on target with the Battue sight sytem and is real nice to carry . Then I also have the power of the 3006.
I have a marlin lever for deer hunting but may just carry the tikka then too because I expect a lot of rain maybe snow this year . MaybeI could get two holes in a deer with my Marlin 35 Remington . But I know I can quickly get one hole in a deer that is going to stop him quick..
Three years ago I used a 45/70 Marlin guide on a deer. The cartridge is great for short range as the deer I shot with it the bullet went from end to end and out. But found the 18.5 Barrel lacking to take a shot over the one hundred and fifty yard mark.
Next Monday we have two weeks to hunt deer. They had the rut about two weeks ago , so the bucks are going to be careful of the hunters instead of constrating on the does.

Wish as well here in Ontario Canada .
Happy

Sorry for the delay;another 'Senior moment' for me
My '94 is an older 'top eject'model that must have a scope offset to the left of the bore.I have a Williams side mount
No,it's not much of a target rifle;I only get 2 inch groups at 100 yards.I'm over 70 years old and only hunt locally, any more.I hunt a heavily wooded area, and the 30/30 is ideal.
