I'm planning to purchase a new Leupold variable, either a 2-7X33 or 3-9X40. With my wife's discount a VX-2 2-7 is $225- and 3-9 is $240-. The other option would be the Leupold Rifleman, 2-7 for $185- and 3-9 for $200-.
Without getting into what other manufacturer's scopes are better for optics or price, are there any advantages or superiority to the VariX opposed to the Rifleman - optics, mechanicals and warranty basically the same?
Thanks, Joe

Hobby,
The VX-II is far suppior to the rifleman series... IF you can get a VXII for $225-240, my advice is to get two!!! You'll find another gun for the other and will never regret the purchase.
best o luck

What kind of rifle is this going on? I also agree that the VX-II is much better.

Go with a Leupold VX-II and don't look back. If the scope is going to be mounted on a fast pointing woods rifle like a Marlin lever action, get the 2-7x33. On a light mountain rifle, get the 3-9x33 ultra-light. It only weighs 8.8 oz. For the typical 22" barreled bolt action rifle, get the 3-9x40.

the 2 has better lense glass, better lense coatings and the crosshair adjustments are 1/4 inch clicks, also better prisms

The scope is going on a Browning 1885 HiWall I had rechambered to 30-40 Krag - 28" octagon barrel, not a lightwt by any means! This is the "sittin' up on the ridge at the new house" rifle I'd daydreamed about since we first decided to split up the old farm 6 years ago. I kept plenty of heavy cover too down below and for that I have a bunch of modern Winchester clone lever bigbores with old Redfield or Lyman receiver sights, but after passing up too many dawn and dusk shots, am still planning to mount a 1-4 Leupold on my '72 production Marlin 45-70.
Thanks guys, you've made me feel a lot better about my choice, Joe
