View Full Version : Weak Taurus revolver mainspring?

I have a Taurus 445 in .44 spl that will fire OK in single action but has lots of misfires in double action. I looked into getting a Wolff replacement spring BUT
1) I can't see how to get the old mainspring off the strut that actually forces the hammer to fall. I can dismount the strut and spring in a fully cocked position, holding it together with a pin through the hole provided in the strut for that purpose. Is there some sort of tool for dealing with this?
2) Wolff only has reduced power springs for Taurus. Does anyone sell full or extra power springs?
3) I made the discovery when I dismounted the sideplate that the action was almost totally dry. I mistakenly oiled it, which made things worse -apparently there is something with a close enough tolerance that the oil acts as a hydraulic damper. I took it apart again to sop out as much oil with a Q tip as I could. The overall action seems much smoother than it was before I oiled it, but it didn't cure the problem. What lubricant (if any) is recommended?
4) Any other suggestions about what to do? Could it be some other cause?

Thanks, fred

Taurus has them and a really great warrentee for their revolvers. I cut back the spring on my 41 tracker a tad to much and had to put a standard factory spring back in it.

Spray it out with break cleaner to get rid of all the oil. I use tri-flon which works better than oil and stay good at really cold temps.

You might be able to just order the mainspring, Lots cheaper than sending the gun.
