My dad has a 4506 he can't get back together so he dumped it on me.
According to the Manual: mag well clear w/ hammer in the fired position, install slide assy pressing down on ejector, sear release and firing pin safety levers until slide stop notch is aligned w/ slide stop hole.
I can't get the slide to go back that far. It stops just past the firing pin safety lever. PLEASE HELP!!! Obviously I'm not a Smith afficionado, but it's too good to become a paperweight.
Thx

Unless you feel something hard that the slide is striking, just push harder. The safety/decock levers put a lot of pressure on the slide and make it difficult sometimes to overcome the friction. My 4006 (Shorty-Forty) does the same thing.

I've got a few 5906s or their varients...I've never had a 4506 apart...but that is how you put a 5906 together. If it hits something hard, then maybe a pin is sticking out or something.
There are 3 things to push down, I think. YOu slide it back, push one down, slide it back so that the slide holds that down, then push the next one down, and slide it somemore. Wait a minute, I think I only have to push it down twice.
Again, you push one down, (the one on the left, when viewed from the back) slide the slide over it, push the next one down and slide the slide all the way back.

what about the recoil spring and guide...are they in the right place. I could see where the spring guide, if it wasn't centered would cause problems.

I will try to help you here but it's been 8 years since I owned a 4506. Push down on anything that the slide runs into( the two items that you mentioned). Continue pushing the slide back, forcing the hammer slightly back until you can push the slide release through the hole on the left side of the gun. If this does not work I cannot help further. There must be something else wrong. It's beenawhile since I did this. Smith and Wesson has(or had) great customer service. Try calling them.
