Try the lower powered Leapold's. The 1 thru 5's or 2 by 7's will stand up to the 458, the 460 Weatherby and most other hard kicking rifles.

This is the kind of rifle that is designed for big bad game. The African open sights are also designed for the use these big bores are made for.

If you're getting eyesight challenged as you get older and open sights just arn't working those lower powered scopes make a 458 much more shootable.

Who cares about the dang scope!?! What about your shoulder? Better get one of these (http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=284105).

Ok...a ,458 isn't for long range, so high scope power isn't needed. Bettter would be something with a widefield of view, probably a variable, with a low end power of about 1.5X to 2X. It recoils a fair bit, so will need a scope with a good amount of eye relief (something in the 3 1/2" to 4" range) and one that won't tend to beat itself to death.

Are others that would fill that need, but these are the one's i've had some first hand experience with:

Burris Signature Select Safari scopes...nice 1.75-5X, will be in the $355-$375 range.

Leupold 4x FxII...basic 4X scope, tought and simple, should find it for about $270.

Leupold VX-3 (this would be one of two I'd want to have on that .458)..even with the "3" in it's name, it's not a 3X...it is a 1.5 - 5X and generally sells for about $400.

Weaver Grand Slam...this one is also a 1.5-5X scope (and the other one I'd like on a .458)...should find one for about $300-$340.

Nikon makes one taht I've only handled on another man's rifle...never shot it...but it looked good and gave mighty pretty color transmission...Believe it was under their Shotgun.Muzzleloader llisting....but I liked the thicker reticle and the extra eyerelief. Believe they are in the $260-$280 range.

------

Will need a very good mount...scopes fail a lot less often than mounts do, so I'd make sure to use a tough mount and mount it well.

My opinion is, you ain't gonna need a scope for the ranges you'll shoot this powder puff anyway and if you do scope it, chances are it will not be the snap-shooter it needs to be. I vote for a good peep sight that usually eliminates "old eye" problems w/o be subject to blocking your vision, fogging, cracking or breaking. Second option is a long relief ghost ring type that mounts in the standard position on the barrel and cuts the "fuzz out" the far sighted people can get with a standard receiver mounted peep. Combine either the peep or ghost w/ a fully hooded front blade and you got a winning combo that won't let you down when you really need it. Either of these options also totally eliminates you ending up looking like someone took a hole punch to your forehead too. Last thing you need with some PO'ed critter fixing to tear you to shreds is blood running in your eyes before the critter even gets to you!

I'm having a little go-around with Weaver right now about warrentee. They also make Simmons and Redfield. They are now owned by Meade optics. They just bought the names from Blount (CCI and Speer).

Anyway the two best scope warrentee's on the market in the US for the money is Leapold and Burris with probably Leapold at the top of the list.

Most any other scope maker's warrentee is listed as a Limited Lifetime affair. Note heavy on the limited.

I've had pretty good luck with the Simmons ATEC's, but you pays your money and takes your chances. With Leapold and Burris you pays your money and not only will they fix a broken scope, but they will thank you for doing business with them.

I'll drop a vote in for the Burris Signature 1.5-6x, 33mm objective, I believe, with the posi-lok feature. Not sure if they make this exact model anymore, but if not, something close to it. This sits on my 416 Taylor, and though it's not a 458, it has a stout recoil with 400's. Before it was on this rifle, it was on a friends 8mm Rem Mag (and he liked the scope but wanted more power), which does have a faster recoil. I'm sold on the posi-lok feature with the heavy kickers.
