Are several sites dedictaed to the substance...so far as I can find out, there isn't any ban on US expeorts or anything stopping the importation...but the FDA might have gotten it's back up about something (like revenge for not allowing some US products) and done smthing stupid.

Really think you have to start a human out in infancy to get them to like the stuff...start jamming vegemite down their thorats soon after weening. If you wait until adulthood, humans haven't built up the resistance to it needed to actually like the stuff.

Kind of like grits to a southerner...or scrapple for a nothener. it's comfort food that brings people back to their childhood.

Thanks for the link Mr. Stone. That helps with the "what" part.

I have never seen it for sale any place I have lived. I know an aircraft mechanic that lived in Australia for a few years. I will ask him about it.

Tell us of the ban Wharf?

Our news has said vegemite has been banned and any aussies coming into your country are being searched at the airports for jars of it.It has something to do with the product containing folate, and your rules saying its only allowed(folate) in bread.I havent done any reaserch into it,i will this arvo,im just about to go to work.

I figure it must be a Government plot to alienate the very few folks that will still talk to us?

I imagine the Government tests that established the need for controls are based on their feeding a rat about 100 lbs. a day and it became obese....thus the restrictions?

But the comforting aspect of this is we all know whatever they (the bureaucracy) does, it's with our best interest in mind?

Dan "we don't have any more of a clue than you do about what/why they do anything.....and we're a lot closer" OK

Might not be anti-vegemite...may just be the fall out of the liquid bomb plot busted in UK. For a time, no one was getting on any flight with any type of liquid or semi-solid. Make-up, soft drinks, hair gel, etc. were being taken away before boarding.

On the other hand, it might be setting off some of the new bio-detectors that are being tested.

Its reported in the press over here as being because of its folic acid content as wharf said. Reports here are saying you only are allowed folate in bread.
Its supposedly getting confiscated on arrival in the US if it was related to the liquid bomb threat it would be confiscated at the start of the flight not the end.
All a bit strange seeing as vegemite is made by Kraft which I believe is a US company. Banning products that are produced by one of your own companies seems a bit strange when you allow it to be sold overseas.
Thought that only occurred with things like DDT.
Cheers.

Well, that's a good example of the right hand not knowing what the left one is doing.

No one ever accused the government of being smart!

Maybe some quasi-official in the office that oversees inport/export tried the stuff one time and didn't like it, so figured it would be good for the country to only export it!!! :p

I spent a couple years in Melbourne, and tried my darnedest to acquire a taste for the stuff, but never did. I melted a bunch one time and told a friend of mine (American) that is was chocolate/carmel topping and he dumped a bunch on his ice cream....boy that was a rude trick....

Wharf- Has anyone tried Vegemite as a cast bullet lube.? I mean you never know...I've got a buddy using dryer lint as a filler in his 577 Snider. I was mentioning to him to try the dust bunnies under the bed-- Cariboo
