i`m having a bit of a dilema with chooseing a new sight for my rifle,i`m old fashioned and do not belive in scopeing a lever gun so i thought of replaceing the rear sight with a marbles full buckhorn sight and at the same time i`ve thought of putting a peep on it and useing it as a ghost ring type deal, any suggestions?

Which have you tried and which do you like? I use peep and ghost rings because I shoot better with them. If you prefer buckhorns then go with buckhorns. After all, it's going on your gun, not mine or somebody else's.

I cant fault rt's logic.
I think most people would probably shoot more accurately with peeps, especially as the eyes start to wear out, but the buckhorns are more traditional on a levergun.
Purely from a target shooting standpoint, I shoot at a lever action club and almost everyone uses peeps except when shooting classic calibre where only original sights are allowed.
My personal preference on my Marlins is a receiver sight with a square post front. I have that setup on a 39A, 39M and '94 .44mag. For cowboy shooting, the receiver sight isn't allowed. I take the factory open rear sight and deepen the notch with a jewler's life. I change out thet front sight for a square blade. Width of the notch and width of the front sight are dependent on the barrel length.
Since I hate a scoped lever-action, on my 1894C I installed a XS rear adjustable peep sight and a red fiber optic front (Williams- I think) sight. For me, it made a world of difference compared to the factory sights. To be honest, I couldn't focus on the sights with my eyes until I switched them. In fact, my second choice were a set of Buckhorn. I only chose the XS sights because I use them on my Blackhawk. Anything is better than those crappy factory things.

I could always shoot better with a peep, not as triditional but thats not what I was looking for. The XS works for me on my Marlin.

Had an old 1894 with the full buckhorn sights. Used the buckhorn for a ghostring. Worked great so bought the Marbles full buckhorn for my Cowboy 44 mag. Very fast and accurate.
I can't seem to use peep sights and got rid of a set of the Ashley sights just a week after I put them on my 1894.
I prefer the Marbles full buckhorn as far as iron sights. Note that there's a difference between Marbles and other makers of of buckhorn type sights, it may not be much, in some cases there're identical but just be aware of your choices.

I am doing OK with the Ashley set up now that I have put in the vacuum hose insert. I can't see at all in low light anyway with the unadapted ring so the very small apeture works well for me.

I've never been very good with blade sights of any form. I can do OK with 3 dots on my handguns, but not great. To this day I regard a pistol as a 21 foot weapon and at 22 feet I can run!
I was worse with a peep sight unti I got enough practice. Now I can do nearly as well with a peep sight as I can with a 2x (and sometimes a 4x) scope at 100 yds with most callibers. And I am several orders of magnitude faster with a peep than I am with a blade.
While I will take a 1.5 or 2x scope over anything else, you couldn't pay me enough to use a "holographic" sight. I'm worse with them than I am with blade sights, honestly.
But then, I'm so far out of the bell curve that statistically I don't exist... :)

Stanger, you are definitely an anomely. But so am I. At least we know it. I think I would have a peep put on my 760 Pump if I was not using it for low light operations. For those last few minutes and they get more minutes every year with my eyes, I need the biggest objective and AO and power. You see here in the land of 10 deer limits and doe tags and legal shooting 1 hr before and after sunset, we kill a lot of deer in those fleeting seconds when the light is going. Optics make some shots possible for me and my buddies. I still loose light before legal shooting time is up in some dark areas of the woods.
When I get my 243 I will put the big optics on that thing.

You will find that you will need a taller front site to match that peep. Order the set. I put the gold bead( Medium height) back on my Marlin and am happy with the set up
Keep in mind that your peep does not fair well in low light if your looking to shoot under these conditions , you can not beat a small low power scope or a red dot.
If you only have one rifle check out the ghost ring / scout set up
Going a lot of walking or in thick cover is one thing , then in the last hour of light in a stand bear hunting over bait is another. Yeah I have more than one rifle for each condition.
