I am brand new to this forum, and need a little advice. I have a 336 in 30-30 win and my problem with this particular gun is that the finger lever jumps open very easily. It seems that the lock isnt tight enough to hold the lever. Any suggestions?

The first thing to check is the finger lever plunger. It's in the top front of the lever, and could be stuck, rounded off or have a weak spring behind it. It should have a square front with 60 - 30 angles. It takes a hard push with my thumb to move it.

Yankee, Jack has it right might just be that you have one that is gummed up with years of crud. You did not say how old the rifle is. There is a small pin holding the assembly together. Remove the lever then drift the pin out, check all parts for damage, if none, clean all components and reassemble. You can make a drift pin for this out of a large nail, just grind the end down to the proper dia and use it, when done use it on a project or discard still a good nail.

If this plunger is stuck, try loosening it up with penetrating oil or WD-40. If that doesn't work, I wouldn't want to try grinding a nail down enough to drive that little pin out. Get a real pin punch like a Snap-On PPC402A. No, it's not as illustrated.

Sometimes the plunger spring is worn, sometimes the edge of the plunger itself is rounded -- sometimes, it's both. As already mentioned, taking out the plunger and spring and cleaning everything is the first option to try. Failing that, use a fine file to recontour the edge of the plunger to a nice, square shoulder. If that fails, just order a new plunger and spring from Brownells or Gun Parts for $12 or so and replace them both. Then, you can complain about the lockup being too tight! :) :)

Thanks for the replies. I figured that it was something pretty basic. I bought the gun a couple of years ago used, no real idea how old it is. I grew up shooting one, had to sell it cuz i was broke, and finally found the one I wanted....thanks again
