I spent last weekend in the Boundary Waters with a couple friends (we took advantage of a couple days off from school). We decided to take the easier route and did some simple drive-in camping, but we went as far north as possible (Baker Lake). The question that I have is: how the heck do you hunt grouse? I haven't the slightest idea and we of course brought up our shotguns and .22's for small game hunting and pretty much spent several hours each day wandering around old logging roads trying not to get lost (but had a great time :) ). I was lucky enough to shoot one grouse that we saw, but I really didn't have the slightest clue on how to really hunt them. Would someone like to please inform me?

GO late in the afternoons when they are pecking gravel off the road to digest their food.
Easy pickin's during that time.

A good upland bird dog helps tremendously!

We either walk them up with dogs or have them driven over us by beater. Grouse are considered an exceptional game here and we would not use a .22 to shoot them.

We used the .22's for squirrels (and were dissapointed to find that all of the squirrels were the really small red ones with white bellies- they were worthless to shoot because they had so little meat on their bodies), not grouse.
