I didn`t like the quality on the factory sights because they looked fuzzy so I installed the Ghost Ring set and don`t like them either. Can anyone help me out with some ideas for hunting sights without using a scope.

Thanks to all,

I'm a big fan of the Williams receiver sights. Their FP series (Fool Proof) have precise adjustments that you can dial in very easily, just like a scope, and then lock down. They're made to mount on the factory drilled holes already on your gun. Find them on eBay for about $40 or new from Midway for a few dollars more. You can purchase screw in aperatures for the rear eyepiece with different diameter holes; smaller for target shooting and larger for hunting. I've got at least six of them on my lever-actions. Love them all!

Ashley (XO Outdoors is the name now, I think) front sight, and either Lyman or Williams peep.

Found an all-steel Redfield peep sight once, but I traded it to a guy who just had to have it for the vintage look.....

Burch,

I own an old 336 .35 remington that came topped with a Lyman 57-A peep. With it I was more accurate throwing rocks.

Swapped it for a Leupold 2-7x just recently and now I'm shooting 1 1/2-inch groups at 100 yrds.

Don't have an answer for ya, but my Lyman didn't help worth a bean.

Still have that old Lyman, or did you trade it?

Nope, I still have it

Don't know which one of us you were asking MikeG, but I still have mine as well.

I'd be willing to trade mine for a 26' Lund Alaskan Cabin Fisherman with twin outboards, a 32' motorhome, or use of Jessica Simpson's ***** for a year.

Lemme know.

Burch, the problem is not the sights -- it's your eyes. As I passed the age of 40, my eyesight started doing the middle-aged thing to the point that bifocals became my answer (with a stronger prescription every 2 years or so). Open sights just became virtually unuseable for me except at close range. The answer was a peep sight.

Many folks don't realize how well a peep sight can be "tuned" to make up for less-than-perfect eyes. Most sights allow you to change the aperture to one of a different size, larger or smaller as needed. That aperture acts like the lens in a pinhole camera, and with a bit of experimentation you can find a hole size that gives a very sharp sight picture. Merit actually makes an aperture unit that can be adjusted, although it's a bit pricey.

Another factor is the type of front sight. For years, my best results came with a fine bead front sight. Lately, though, I have had increasing trouble getting a good sight picture with a bead -- using a smaller aperture, I could get a sharp picture, but the aperture was really too small for field use. Now, I've switched to a silver blade sight and find I am back up to snuff with it.
