Hello All, Great forum! I just bought a Knight Wolverine rifle in 54 caliber. I want to hunt bear, Elk and Deer with it. In my state, we can't use sabots or jacketed bullets. Could anyone reccomend a good lead bullet? I've considered the LEE 300gr and 380 gr and I'm willing to mould my own. Thanks

I liked the Hornedy 400 + Great Plains bullets. If you want to cast your own look at the Lee Improved Minnie's. I had great accuracy with both these bullets.
i't will help if you slug your bore so you know exactly what size you need. My 54 Rem 700 ML took the oversize Lee improved minnie's. the Standard size would drop to the bottom of the bore without touching the rifling.

I've been hunting with a Knight .54 for 20 years now and have killed many a deer with the round ball and patch. The Knight shots the round ball with 100 grs, exactly like a 250 xpt .451 with 110 grs. and red Knight sabot. The ball travels around 1600 fps and man it does some damage to a deer. It will be completly flaten after pentration and usually sticks in the hide on the other side. The big Bufflo bullets pass right through a deer without opening out. If you were to find the bullet you could almost shoot it again. Balls would not be good on anything larger than a deer. You will be somewhat limited for loads on larger game with your state restrictions.
Good luck.

I have been shooting a TC Rennegade in 54 cal and have found I get the best accuracy with the Maxi Ball. I used it a couple of years ago on an Elk when I lived in AZ. The slug went completly through him and he went no more than 20 feet before he piled up. It wasn't a long shot, maybe 70 or 80 yards. I know I struggled over whether I should get a .50 or a .54 caliber. I am very happy I deceided on the .54. Best of luck in future hunts.

CVA's 375gr Buckslayer is a good .54 cal hunting bullet. Midwayusa.com product # 196352.
Hornady 390 and 425 grain Great Plains Bullets are good as well. (#481596 and #632781)
