My son has a 336 (not sure which mod) 30-30 that has de cided to lock itself open. The only way I could unlock it was to remove the lever and reinstall. I had him get some good gun cleaner and clean the action and then lightly oil key moving parts. But this has not resovled the problem any suggestion?

Welcome to the forum Bigbang. I'm sorry I can't help you, I'm a bolt guy, just wanted you to feel welcome here.

Come on all you Marlin users, lets give this guy a hand and see if we can figure out whats wrong with this 336.

I see your from Florida. I'm up here in cold Idaho and it's 18 degrees above zero this morning. Got the car started and warming up to take the granddaughter to the school bus stop so she won't have to stand out in the cold. No snow yet, but all we need are the clouds with some moisture.

Might want to start by making sure that all receiver screws are tight (firmly snug), especially the loading gate screw.

+1 on above. My loading gate was bent and the screw was loose and would lock mine open. Reshaped the gate and tightened the screw and all is well.

Thanks for the tips. Personally I am semi auto now. M1A and Bushmaster. But do hunt with a bolt 300 WM. I am currently in CA for another month then back to sunny Fl and the home of the little or no restrictions. Anyhow my son has the gun at his place so will go take a look at it again tomorrow. I checked all the screws for tightness and ALL were exceptionally tight. The threads on a couple were gummed up from oil or.... Wasn't sure I could even get the lever out. He didn't have any cleaner at the house so he had to get some and see if a good cleaning would help. Last I heard it would cycle a couple of times empty then lock up.

By the way I like this forum wish I had found it earlier

Thanks for the help

Mine did the same thing, Right after I tightened all the screws. Remove the bolt and inspect the inside of the receiver for any protruding screws, especialy the scope base.

I've found that if the loading spring plate doesn't come out of the reciever enough, it gets caught on the carrier when it begins to rise. check to see if there is any debris between the plate and the receiver, the spring may also be worn.

Loading gate screw was the culprit. Just loose enough toallow the gate to catch. It didn't take much to retighten. Thanks for the tips.
