View Full Version : Incorrect Hammer Spur?

I bought a Marlin 336SS and it came with a Hammer Spur. This spur was strongly suggested for use with a mounted scope. However, when I tried to install it, it would not fit.
Does someone know, from experience, what I may be doing wrong? I doubt Marlin would include incorrect parts with their products.

There are two sizes as the 1957-1982 rifles had a different hammer than later production. That might be the problem. Older hammers are .265 wide and I don't know the size of the newer hammers.

The hammer spur that came with my 336w doesn't fit either. Anybody know why?

I think the newer ones are 0.375", but I could be a bit off on that. Brownell's carries both sizes, by the way.

Did you back out the set screw before installing?? mine were in and had to be loosened to put on, and double check to make sure there in the slot correct place..

yeah, the set screw was backed out. didn't matter though. the slot is too small for the hammer.

I actually have a 1964 336 and can't find anyplace that has any of the narrow hammer spurs instock. What's more, due to a webpage error at Marlin, I have three of the wide hammer spurs. One of them I've made work on the gun, but I would be willing to trade you one of the other wide ones for your (apparent) narrow one.
PM me if you're interested.

FSTOP, a thought for you. If you're right handed, place the spur to the LEFT. That way you don't have to move the right thumb around the hammer to cock the rifle. Bandito

I would suggest lock tight on the screws if you ever get the spur to fit. I have lost two from vibration.
