I am new to this website, but reading through this forum it looks like you guys really know your 336's. I recently inherited my grandfathers 336 in 30-30. I want to attach a sling to carry the gun but there are no mounts (it was made in 1972...thanks for the links to the sites on year of manufature). A local gunsmith said that it is too much trouble to hunt down a replacement front barrel band witha built in swivel. He suggested to just attach a clip swivel to the magazine tube. This rifle has a lot of sentimental value to me and I don't want to make any modifications that will scare the gun. The replacement band seems make more sense to me. What do you guys think

That's what I'm using and I've not noticed any scarring or damage to the mag tube where the swivel post clamps on.
You will, however, have to drill a small hole in the buttstock to screw the rear swivel post into. I look at it as an improvement, not a scar, though.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess the local guy was right about not replacing the barrel band. I appreciate the help
