I read on a forum somewhere that plain based cast bullets should not be used in a ported gun. Any thoughts on that?

What will happen is that as the bullet base passes the ports, some of the powder gasses will escape through the ports and erode the base slightly in this region.

So you will get lead deposited in the ports (minor) and a bullet base that is no longer symmetrical (major) which will destroy all hopes of accuracy.

I'm not saying that it's impossible to make work, it's just going to be difficult.  Depending on the bullet hardness, barrel length, pressures, etc., it might work in some cases but is known to cause problems.

Thanks Mike, I actually saw that in my Taurus Tracker. Above every port hole was a small mound of lead. This was after about 250 rounds. Accuracy did not seem to suffer as they shot bout as well as jacketed. Terry, someplace I read (might have been in this forum, or some place) that if you put a Break Free around the port it will stop or at least make the lead easy to get off. My 10in. 44 is ported and tried it on there and it seemed to work fairly well. Have my 1895ss 45/70 in being ported and the gun smith told me to do the same thing. All the bullets I cast are flat base and havant &nbsp;noticed any diffrence in accuracy. &nbsp;I cant hit nothing anyway so I dont &nbsp;worry about &nbsp;the accuracy.
