How many of you fellas have got your R class license?Its a NSW thing only.

I'll be aiming for one eventually - no pun intended.

The R class license is for recreation hunters for use in NSW state forests.It is great.I can book a forest online and print out the paper work.It has nothing to do with the state laws.Uniform gun laws will never happen unless we all dont have any.Victoria has a simmilar system where hunters can hunt state forests and national parks for deer.

Hunting state forrests over here is a sure way to end up gunless.

What have you figured out about the course or requirements for gaining the R license ... I saw the SSAA have a 10 day course for it on some property that costs about $800 odd ... they teach you all you need to know in order to qualify for the R and you get to hunt while on the camp out also.

Apart from that you can sit a written test or something ... I should get more details from the SSAA.

I dont know about the coarse tiki,i have done a bit of hunting myself(25years) already,maybe its to help people who have no idea about finding game,reading the signs and maybe firearms safety.I sat a open book test for a hour or two and did all four catergories.I will probably never hunt with blackpowder or dogs.Bow and firearms is my mainstays.But its the same price for all why not have them.It would be tops for people just getting into hunting or people getting back into it.I hunted a R class forest with a mate on the weekend.The only thing i wasnt happy with was the GC map.It was very grey,work areas and exclusion zones were very hard to make out.But it was a good trip getting out of the house for the weekend.Friday was a total fire ban which stops you from even entering the forests.So we stopped at a mates place and went spotlighting and got 3 foxes and a few hares.Lucky the ban was lifted during the night.The hunt wasnt very exciting but the weather was awesome for hunting.Light rain and light wind.

Sounds great mate ... I haven't done any hunting for years. What are the requirements for sitting the written tests ... for somebody coming back into it is there a way to learn what you need to know FOR the test before sitting it ... how exactly does it work if you are new to it and wanting an R or getting back into after years away?

To qualify for R class you must be a member of SSAA or an approved hunting club,have a current shooters license with recreational hunting on it. If you fail the test you shouldnt have the R license,its an open book test.

Tikirocker, I've just complete the 'closed book test' for the Game Council's R licence - several rather simple, common sense type multiple choice questions - honestly no big deal. Apparently SSAA members can simply pay a $28 'administrative fee' to be tested by one of their examiners. Thereafter, the number of set questions depends on how many licence categories you wish to be tested on. The relevant HAND BOOK has lots of practical data and test preparation questions - good value.

Wharf, my Game Council R licence will hopefully be processed within the next two weeks and then I look forward to extending my hunting opportunities into numerous State Forests. Considering the number of introduced ferals out there, I’m only too willing to oblige in helping to control their numbers.

The recent dry spell and the biological control of rabbits using myxomatosis and Calicivirus certainly have been effective in recent years – as observed on a friend’s property near Queanbeyan. I’ve being recreational hunting there for the last 30 odd years and there are noticeably more hares than rabbits. With the recent rains I hope their population increases somewhat. In the meantime, I’ve bought my first centrefire rifle (a beautiful old Browning B78 High Wall single shot / falling block in .243 Win).
I’ve also elected to reload and have acquired an invaluable amount of knowledge, ideas etc from various very helpful members on the Shooters Handloading forums.

I have had my r class for near on a year now,and have recently been out using it.I have plenty of places to hunt around my place but its nice for a change to get out into the state forests.

Gday ayjay,You will find most forums are doing it now.Its hard to find a forum that doesnt do it in australia.A lot also have hidden forums on the board for regular members with post counts over a certain number to keep the antis at bay.
