Well, I'm going to the grandparent's place in Virginia for X-mas and was gonna do some hunting. I'm going to be taking my 336 in 30-30. Virginia deer tags come (at least they did last time) with turkey tags on them, and I think the Hornady round might pop a turkey. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good load that'd work for turkey out to maybe 50 yards?

My friend will be loading the rounds, so I just want to know what to tell him.

A .310"-115g FNPB Cast bullet over 7.5g Unique and most any large rifle primer. This has proven to be an extrememly accurate and consistent load over the years for many folks. It basically duplicates the old .32-20 load which put many wild gobblers into the roasting pan! :D

Here's an example of the bullet
BTB 32-20 Caliber 115g FNPB (http://www.beartoothbullets.com/bulletselect/display.php?catagory=11)

Happy Thanksgiving... hope you get your turkey!

God bless,

I've punched a gobbler with a full-house .35 Rem load, by the way - you just have to hit them across the back, high, and miss the breast. Do it right and you'll break the back and hardly mess up any meat at all.

Reduced loads are always a good idea, though!

Ok, here's what my friend came up with....

The load is around 1100fps (muzzle) according to his calculations (no chrono). It's a 110 grain FMJ 30-carbine bullet atop of 15.1 grains of Hodgens (sp?) H335 powder.

Might have some of the details (i.e. powder brand) off since I'm not a reloader myself.
