Found a very clean Browning BAR grade II in .308 Win.
From the serial # I know it was made in '68.
Wood has some scratches but bluing is a strong 92-95% with no rust, noticeable dings or deep scratches.
Looked online and saw a couple in .30-06 but none for sale in .308.
Is this a good caliber in the BAR?
Are the older Belgium rifles accurate?
Price is $450. Fair?

I'm not sure about BAR 308s, but I have a 1986 yr BAR,Belgium/Portugal in .270 that I paid a little over $500 for. It's condition sounds similar to the 308 you found. My 270 is very accurate, functions flawlessly and is a very beautiful. Boy,would I jump all over that deal!!

That is a good price and the 308 is a good cartridge. I've had two BAR's, both in 300 Win mag, come thru the pawn shop near home and both were not in as nice a shape as the one you discribe and both were in the 600 dollar range.

More info...
It is a grade II with the engraving of elk on one side and antelope on the other.
Pretty sure I am going to pick it up.

WFR, I don't think you can go wrong with this choice. I am very pleased with my BAR and have not regretted the choice!!

Brought it home today!
Took off the Leupold base and rings.
Had a couple of slight marks from them as I have grown used to seeing.
It's got a weird fold-down rear-sight.
I may have to post some pictures later if I can figure out how.
Can't wait to go shoot it!

That BAR .308 should shoot around 1.5" I think the BAR's are good rifles, and they produce hunting accuracy

I did get a chance to shoot it a while back.
Shoots great but I was having some issues with it dinging up the cases pretty bad. After about 5 rounds the 6th one wouldn't seat all the way.
Took it to the gunsmith and he found a rough edge in the chamber. When he gets time he will smooth this out and I will go back to the range.
Didn't care for the open sights and am considering mounting a 1.5-5 or 2-7 scope on it.
Sweet shooting rifle though.
Saw another Grade II today ('70) .30-06 going for $550 or so and last week saw an older Grade II .30-06 in 85% condition for $695. They aren't getting any cheaper.

I have used BARS for years in .270,.338win and .308 presently using my .308 as my .270 is shot out with use, these are in my opinion the best hunting rifle for my type of hunting. They are easy ro reload for but they do tend to damage brass as it is being thrown clear especially with hotter loads - invariably they tend to put a flat spot on one side of the caseneck as it is thrown clear. My .338 can hold MOA if I do my bit and the .270 I put away when it started shooting around 3"moa.(this after 2500+loads) The .308 I use will shoot into 1.5moa all day with slightly reduced loads.

I've sold many BAR, but the only one I used for any length of time was a 338. The rifle did what I wanted it to do, shot fair groups (1.5") and took out some of the kick. I had a chance to own a friends beautiful BAR in 300 Win Mag, much like you are describing, but I had to disipline myself then and I sold it the day I picked it up for profit.

I think the price is right, my buying price for those guns was about $400 back in the late 1990s, and selling them at $550 of more, so, you got a very good deal and can't lose money on it. That's like money in the bank!

YES, it is a very good buy and those Belgium rifles are top notch for accuracy and workmanship. I have a Bar but it is not the Belgium made, wish it was but nonetheless you have a quality BAR for sure.

Shoot a BAR w/Boss in 30-06. AFTER a trigger job, shoots MOA with factory ammo @ 100yds. Can't beat 'em!!!!!!!!
