Last weekend I shot at a big hog with my Mossberg 20 gauge with rifled barrel and 2.5 x 10 Aetec scope. It was close-about 40 yards and it ran off with my 3/4 ounce Barnes/Federal slug-I think-but may have shot high.
I'll be hunting this area again around New Years and will let my wife have the first shot with her 7-08 but if a bunch of hogs come out again I'd like to make some sausage with a backup gun. The Mossberg is a pump and I have a 44 mag pump but I think I could do more damage with a semi-auto. My choices (unless you guys think I should buy another gun) are Rem 1187 smoothbarrel/sights with non-sabot slugs, sks, 6.5 Swede semi-auto (it's a bit long for a stand), Win 100 in 243.
If you vote for a new gun, you're probably hoping to buy my guns at an Estate sale after they haul my wife to jail for using her 7-08 on me.

I have shot many hogs with the 7mm-08, and the 243 Win is also a good one. Id opt for a rifle instead of a pistol or shotgun. You don't get that many close up shots.
If you think you shot high, you probably did, and in that case, a 458 Winchester wouldn't be enough.
Good luck and kill all of the hogs you can, I need help!
6.5x55mm, by all means! :D

Go 243, it works well with hogs and the low recoil gives you the opportunity for another shot. I once got 3 hogs with my bolt action rem 700 in 243 as they ran by. :D Now I'm wanting to get one with my pistol. Last week I got a good boar with a .50 cal muzzleloader.

If you want to shoot more than one, try for the biggest in the bunch. Some of the piglets may be confused if it doesn't run off and you might get one or two more.

Thanks guys. Think I'll go with the 6.5 Lungman loaded with 10 rounds of 140 grain ammo. It's a sweet shooter with aperature sight and factory muzzle brake. Now if I can just get that barrel out of the window without hitting the tin roof.
