I have the opportunity to buy a Weatherby Mark V synthetic .240 Wby. mag. at a very reasonable price. The gun is practically new, and has been fired maybe 20-30 times at the most. I was wondering if anyone on the board has used the .240 for deer? Also, which factory load do you think will work best? I am leaning towards either the 90 grain barnes x, or the 100 grain partition.

If you intend to shoot this gun a lot you need to be a hand loader. The ammo is expensive and hard to find but you can reuse the brass over and over. The 240 is to 6mm bullets what the 257 Weatherby is to 25 cal bullets. Both are large powder cases with a relatively small bullet. For deer you will need a fairly tough bullet to hold together at the speeds you can achieve with the Weatherby. My guess is any factory ammo will work well but I would go with the partition bullet.

I use the 100grn partition weatherby load in mine. Knocks whitetails down well but stay away from heavy bones as they tend to punch large hole in things.

It's a good round, and a good rifle. For deer, I'd use the heaviest bullet you can - both loadings you mention would be a good choice. And, it will launch rockchucks into the stratosphere with a good varmint bullet!

Please use lower case when responding to posts. Upper case is akin to shouting in someone's ear.

Thank you.

I've got a German Mark V in .240. I've killed deer with the 100 gr Partition and the Hornady SP. The Hornady bullets group much better in my rifle. I've found the .240 to be tit-for-tat with the .25-06 for all practical purposes. Then again, I've never found the .243 Win. or 6mm Rem. lacking on game as far as that goes.

Jason if your going to go after varmits try the 55 grain noslers. In my 243 I can push them over 4000 fps and boy do they take coyotes and squirrels apart.
