Hi ya guys! Mi name is Michelle, my husband and I live in Pennsylvania and last night I received my very first gun. Oh my God!!! Dennis, the hubs, bought me a Marlin .22 with scope. He had to tell me because he dropped the box of ammo and I found the stray bullet. I said, is that a bullet? He then brought her out. Oh I love her! I have never fired anything other than a hand gun but played with an empty 30/06 when I was a little guy. I am so excited and I can't wait to break some bottles. She was owned by a wise gun dealer who suggested this as my first. Dennis has a Pump Action Shotgun, he is good at it. I don't like the shotgun. Scary. But I always wanted to be Annie Oakley. Seriously. Off the hip. Any suggestions to my next move?

Is it a Marlin Model 60 auto loader? If so I made up a bayonet for one a couple of months ago.

cans are better targets........you can see the holes and you can pick them up when you leave
+1 to not shooting bottles.

Welcome.... might be a good idea to take a gun safety class, and then join a range. Have fun....

Good targets are coffee can covers. They are plastic and come in different colors. They are exactly six inches in diameter, and can be stapled to a target stick. Also any lids off any margarine, cottage cheese, etc. containers. They leave bullet holes, can be pulled out of the ground, and the covers can be saved for good shooting stories, such as " I got this six inch group at 200 meters with open sights", eh, eh.

bottles and jars are good targets because they are highly reactive, but you need to set them up in some kind of skip bin otherwise cleaning up afterwards will be a major pita.
Once you get your accuracy down pat grab a handful of your husbands old shotgun shells, they fly several feet when you hit them, several yards if you hit the brass bit.

I like to take a bag of soda cans to the range. You can see the holes you put in them and after shooting they recycle just as well when ventilated. My grandbabies love punching holes in them. Start off close when your beginning. ten to 12 yards is not to far til you get better shooting. Sight your new gun in off a bench at a range so you know exactly where it's shooting and enjoy. Wally world has ammo for around ten bucks a brick (500 to 550 rounds) so practice a lot.
Check out some of the swinging resetable targets as your local Walmart. Not expensive and good practice.
I will also go along with MikeG's suggestion. Get a hunter safety course and a state hunting license. Lots of small game you can take with a 22.
Oh and welcome to the forum.
