Dennis,
I edited your post to exclude the last few digits of the serial number. You never know you might be looking at these forums. It's better to be safe and not put the whole serial number out there when inquiring about a firearm. No offense was intended.

There should be enough serial number left there for someone to help identify the year the rifle was made. I'm not sure where to find the exact year of manufacture for Remington.
On Remington's website, they list the years of manufacture for the models at http://www.remington.com/library/history/firearm_models/centerfire/model_700.asp
I'm not exactly sure which model yours is, but would suspect it is one of the DB or DBM's that were made from around 1995 or 1996 up to around 2004.
Maybe some of our more fanatical Remington members can come up with the exact year of manufacture for you, but it does appear the fellow was probably telling you the truth. I don't think there would be any reason to not believe him given this information.

You date most Remingtons by the date code on the barrel, not by the serial number. They missed at least one in 1922 and some in 1999-2001. Look it up here.

Jack is correct, the date code is two or three letters stamped on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. For example: BZ is stamped on the one that I just looked at. The first letter is the month - B = January. Next is - Z = 2004. Made in Jan. of 2004.
Post you date code and I will look it up for you.
