I have a Remington SPS SS in .30-06 and it is a wonderful rifle. The stock is not going to win any awards but it is more than adequate and very functional for hunting applications. Accuracy is good shooting just over an inch with Remington and Federal loads. My particular rifle didn't like the Hornady rounds much. I think you will find the trigger is better on the Remington than the Savage. It may be stiff out of the box but is adjustable. See some of Bob's notes on the gunsmithing board concerning the triggers. Is the Stevens a decent rifle? Yes. If I had the money and I could pick either which would I pick? Remington. That is my opinion. You need to shoulder both rifles and see what feels best for you. If you are looking at hunting applications either rifle will do fine.

I have a 700 varment in 22-250, ugly gun with all surfaces matt finish, even the bolt has a matt finish. Stock is graphite kevlar composit greyish black in color. Hammer forged barrel with target muzzle crown. 6.5x20 Leupold w/1/8 min. dot and fine cross wires. Shoots like a laser gun. if you miss it's your fault. Has vaporized many PD's in South Dakota. The SPS should do very well as it's a more modern rifle, mine's about 6 yr's old. TF

Since when do rifles become obsolete in only 6 years?

I'm a Remington fan so anything I say is somewhat biased though.

I have Several model 700's and a model 7. all are excellent rifles and not only feel great but shoot great. The SPS is the entry level Remington 700 so does not have all the whistles and bells of a CDL or Mountian rifle. You'll find it a good shooter and nothing in the world is easier to upgrade when it comes to a Remington.

I shoot them in 243, 308, 280 Remington and 8mm Remington Magnum.

You might also check out the Ruger 77's. They are also excellent rifles for the money.

I have shot and owned many Remington rifles and I think they are the best working man rifle on the market.
I have just finished my hunting season with the new CDL in a 270 calibre and my nephew who hunts with us was so impressed with mine that he bought same gun in a 7mm mag.
We both had Remington detachable clip systems installed. Both the rifles are nail pounders.
