In a few days I will be getting the 1858 Remington 44 that I ordered. I will be a few weeks until I can get all the gear that I will need to do a complete shoot and clean.
After opening the package and drooling, pointing the revolver at the mirror and saying "You talkin to me?". Cleaning is the first concern.
The mainstay is resonably hot soapy water soak, then tooth brush scrub, dry and oil. Is the cleaning process for a new gun the same? Some have stated that they even use boiling water. I tend to agree with boiling solution. As the pours of the metal would be opened up and release fouling. Can oil be added to that solution? I would think that would aid in the oil getting into the metal pours and help both clean and season. Particularly after the gun has been cleaned and is drying. The water evaporates and the oil is left behind. Plus the pours will shrink, getting the oil to stay in the pores of the metal. Is my thinking correct on this matter? Do I have it right?
Is a full take down of the gun and inerds needed on a new gun? Is the brass cleaned the same as the rest, seperatly of course?
What is a good grease for the cylinder pin?
Thats enough questions for now....
