Am I the only one getting antsi to start shooting targets again? I'm rehabbing from the heart surgery and it's going great, but I'm restricted to how much weight I can lift yet and how heavy of recoil I can take. I'm casting up a storm and loading up all my brass just waiting to start shooting the heavier guns. I'm still looking for a .444 so I can compete with Rowdy but even if I find one I'll have to wait a while to shoot it! I can't wait!

Mike,
We blamed your heart attack on Rowdy, figured it happened when you saw the score he shot ;) Planning on getting even this year?? :D
I'm starting to get the fever also, but I need to get busy loading.
Hope you had a Merry Christmas, and the New Year is filled with time to shoot!!

I used just about every gun on the rack but still couldn't beat those Marlin .444's so I'm eager to either find one or something else to compete with them! I'll get even somehow! :D

Stumbled across these postal match threads tonight and I can't wait to participate in one myself! Anybody willing to spill any secrets to get me off in the right direction? In terms of which 35 remington bullet has been giving the best results? Also I hope a car top and a rolled up tarp isn't considered cheating for the bench category? :D

Right after the first of the year, I will clean up the linked web pages and get the winning targets posted. I think a auto truck hood might be the standard base.
I haven't tracked bullet data, just what is provided on the standing list.

Zen,
I took 2nd place in the scoped bench category this year. My "bench" is a piece of 2 x 12 layed across the bed of my truck :D :D . I hope you join us next year. It's a lot of fun and will greatly improve your lever gun shooting skills.
I'm ready to go. I've been thinking over my strategery. :D and I just need one more rifle.

Oh the smell of burning powder and the thuwack of bullets hitting paper. I don't think I can wait too much longer! Just might have to head out to the back pasture and go after some man-eating pop cans.
Hitting a soda can won't rank you very high in the postal match. Print out some targets and get dialed in before the match starts.

L.O.L. ,It has been months since I blew the cobb webs out of my 94 trapper. I would be happy if I still could bounce some cans around. Do to training scheudles for work I have been spending too much time with Black rifles and handguns but as this year gets going I can have more time to do some recreational shooting and get back to some basics and just plain have some fun. :D

Well I don’t like where this is heading, no sir, not one bit. It’s got all the makings of some sort of conspiracy… :D
Good to see your feeling better Mike. So are you and jb12string proposing a two-man team event, with an agitate score? Held on the side of course, with a small cash award… Don’t want to cause Ranch Dog anymore work…
So the teams will consist of – a veteran “someone who has shot in a past RD Postal Match” and a rookie “someone who hasn’t shot in a RD Postal Match”…
Lots of details to workout…How to make it a fair competition; a 100yd offhand team can’t compete with a 50yd bench team…jb12string has to shoot his own targets; no shooting them for him Mike… :D Say wasn’t he the one last year whining about not being able to get 5 consecutive shots on the paper… :p

Hey Rowdy, I was in Gander Mt. this pm and picked up a box of 444 Marlin and opened them up. How in the world do you get those big boys to pile on top of each other on the target? They made my chest hurt just thinking about shooting them!

A state or region team could have as many shooters as they could get and you could take the top 3 or 5 or whatever # of targets from them and average them for the teams score? The PA team could send the winners lots of boloney if by chance we didn't win. :D

My apologies as I just read this thread and your name toggled my memory. I got that trigger and many thanks. I usually am prompt about nice favors like that but I suppose circumstances got in my way. Again, my apologies.
Maybe I can work it over and finally have a good trigger for my .444SS and move up the ladder this year for the 50 yd open sights. I just cast 1,250 boolits for the .444's and need to load some up for sure. I tried last year to only work on my longer range shooting but was induced to offer a challenge. Looks like this year's long range shooting might be in jeapordy also!!

Wow! What an afternoon! Jan 6th in short sleeves shooting steel plates. Very windy though so didn't even try targets just shot plates at 150 and 200 yds. with the marlins and winnies. It was fun but I could tell how rusty I am. I'll have to whip myself in shape for the PM. and my chest is definitely not ready for a 444. I might have to stick with the little guys for a while. :D

According to the weather report it was 70 here today, it felt warmer, I wore shorts and flip flops all day.

It has the tube in it now. I shot a whitetail with it in there this year and it worked great. The screw in apetures from williams are not very expensive and I can try diff hole sizes since I know the smaller peep does help. I can't get the tubing finished out to suit me but it is mostly just me and that perfection thing going on. The vacuum tube is more than functional.
The downside of the Williams aperture is that it will limit the downward adjustment of your sight and it doesn't have that much elevation adjustment to start with. It is easy enough to file or grind the OD of the aperture down to get some clearance if you need it.
It was Eljay from the Marlin 39 forum that orginally posted the tubing fix, I never would have thought of it on my own.

Got to Gander Mt last night. No used levers and not many new ones! They had several marlins in 45-70 and 450 Marlin. they both look like they'd not be fun guns to shoot! I don't remember if anybody shoots the 450 in the PM. Whats it like?

01-07-2007, 08:46 AM
Chief,
You are correct sir…In order for us to compete with the guys using peeps, we need to make the aperture smaller…How about a tube inside a tube, and then pulled thru the ghost ring…And then with a sharp razor knife, cut-off cleanly…This gives me an aperture size of .060”… ;)

Mike, you might give Cabela's in Hamburg a call and see what they have out there on their used rack, the levers can be hit or miss there (availiblity, not accuracy). Check with Shumans in Newville, they have a pile of different guns, bet you can find 444 there

My wife & I were at Cabelas near Hamburg today. This was my first visit on a weekend, our other three visits were mid-week. The place was mobbed. Way too crowded to even get near the used gun racks. Some places you could barely get through an aisle. Plus their prices are outrageous, but someone has to pay for the extravagance there.
I'll take the friendly neighborhood gun shop any day of the week. Not as much to see but very user friendly.

I'm having fun looking and actually hoping I don't find a good deal on one for a couple of months. Got the daughters wedding to pay for in March then I'll start squirreling mad money and looking seriously. If I find one now I'd have to be careful when I blend it in with all the others or management might get grumpy!

The next best one with same bullet and primer is 18.5 Acc XMP 5744 which chronos at 1141 fps

If the weather cooperates some evening this week I will try to send some lead down range and hope to get tiny little groups on paper. Well at least its starting to feel like winter around here now...not that I'm complaining about all those 60 degree days, but I was going to have to break out the lawn mower soon if winter didn't get here soon!!
Keeps the barrels nice and cool between strings though :D

Burrrr! 30 degrees and dropping and windy. Still had to shoot. Too cold to drag out the sand bags and spotting scopes etc. so just stood on my two hind feet and banged away at the 50yd steel plates with the Marlin .45 Colt. Shot 50 rounds, had fun, got cold and went back to work. Going to have to practice more to have a chance in PM. :D

I’m not sure, but I do believe I have a little sunburn on the back of my neck…50 deg. bluebird day an no wind, I just had to take the 444’s to the range today… :D
Shooting off the bench it was so bright; I had to find my shades…
Mike B, you might think about casting some more boolits !!! :D

Ranch Dog, I have a question sir.
Is the use of a rifle “sling” permitted in the offhand matches ? I found no mention of their use in the rules…
My goal this year is to get 5 consecutive shots in the target, offhand… ;) It just didn’t happen last year… :o

Good question, thoughts from others? Personally, i don't see why not as it would be how you might shoot in the field.
My vote would be No, for slings. It is a definite advantage and many Marlins do not come with sling swivels.

I like the thought as would or do I hunt this way. That is how we should practice and isn't that what this is all about?
For a great many of us in the Southeast the most logical position would be sitting. 99.9% of the deer I have ever killed, I was either sitting in a stand or ground blind. Either that or leaning against the door frame of my back porch. :D

NRA Lever Action Silhouette is shot standing only and no slings are allowed. Just throwing this in here to give you another perspective.

I don't have have sling swivels, so I vote no too. Now if I had my grandfathers gun...

It doesn't matter either way to me.
I vote no also. Not all guns are going to have sling studs. And the proper use of the sling is a definite advantage.

Ohh-tay, not really the response I had hoped for but nonetheless it’s the correct one…My ignorance of Marlin Firearms is showing here…Just because both my 444’s have sling studs, I just assumed, all Marlin’s had them…What’s fair for one, must be fair for all…
Looks like this dude needs to order more bullets and practice... :D
Thanks guys…

"What’s fair for one, must be fair for all…"
Won't you have to give everybody a .444 to make it fair for all, or do you think the shooter's might have something to do with it? :D

Now come on guys. This contest has little to do with winning. It is to get folks out there shooting the lever guns and get in some practice to make them better shots when the time comes. If a guy chooses to do a trigger job to get better, no one has an issue but install a sling stud is different? We would have to say, stock out of the box, oops, the marlin comes with studs out of the box. I don't have a sling for shooting help on my rifle. It is to carry but in the woods if I need to steady on an offhand shot and I have time to do a little tightening of my hold with a sling, I will do it. The rules already allow you to lean against a tree or your truck or something. This could get mighty confussing.

That's news to me. I though off hand meant no support for your arms or the rifle.

Well said Chief. We all hunt differently and like you said the whole point was to get us ready for hunting season. And like you said, some rifles have trigger and action jobs and that is ok. I don't have a problem with someone using a sling. The key to all of this is to get out and shoot, the more you shoot the better your targets will be. A guy who shoots 500 rounds out of his rifle will most likely do better than a guy that only shoots five rounds, so do we limit the amount one person shoots because another guy doesn't shoot as much?
The field is pretty level as is. Scopes are limited to 4x the front rest is limited and if a person feels they need a sling to be on par with someone who has a sling, they can always add them on if they feel that will really make a difference. I usually don't shoot with a sling in the off hand position because when hunting the off hand shots I have had don't allow time to get the sling positioned, so I shoot without it. It doesn't matter to me if someone uses a sling or not. It isn't that big of a deal.
The thing to keep in mind is that the prizes are drawn at random, and the guy with the largest group stands as much of a chance at winning the grand prize as the guy with the smallest group..so what does it really matter? You stand a better chance of actually shooting targets and sending them in, the more targets you shoot the better your chances of winning.
Americans play to win all the time, and will not tolerate a loser.
Whatever the Potentate says is fine by me. I've already figured out how to make a no gunsmith shooting sling with a nylon dog leash and some baling wire.

If I cared so much about winning I would borrow my friends Savage 99 in .308 that shoots very little groups. Oh! I already plan to do that. I think it has sling studs too.
The .308 round I have ready for the H&R Ultra shot .75" it's first time out. It should do better in the 99. Watch out boys, it's going to get different for the Chief.

It’s good to clear this up now before the bullets begin to fly…So in the offhand match I’ll be shooting, standing, no sling, and not leaning against anything???That’s so easy even I can understand it…
You fellows shooting the 50yd match have nothing to fear from me, except for maybe cracking a rib from excessive laughter, after seeing my targets…

I sure hope to send in a lot maore targets this year than last. I will not be swapping from optics to iron this year with the 1894. It is iron from now on , on that rascal.
I hope the 99 still has glass on it though. It did last time I borrowed it. This is going to be a blast.

Early.
My model 36 made in '47 shoots like a dream.
Okay guys...
I shot all my targets in PA last year, so does that qualify for the PA team? :D Don't seem to have a NJ one :( And Mike you kicked my butt with that 250 Savage of yours in the 100yd offhand scope. That was my best offhand group ever, only problem was it hit alittle south of the bullseye.
Gearing up the 356 Win, 375 Marlin, and the 1895 45-70 for the scoped events, and a 44-40, and a 30-30, for the open sighted events...Watch out boys that 44-40 is really shooting straight :D

Dude... read the rules. You can actually use any target that the aim point area is not greater than 4". It has always been this way. The new target just has blocks for the required info as I need to start collecting data for the prize vendors if we want this to continue and I've spent way too much time tracking this down after a target is submitted. Not going to do it this year as it takes away from me participating in the match. No info... no entry.
Let's see, should have stuff coming from Bushnell, Lee, LimbSaver, Marlin and a couple of retail outlets!
