I have a 2 year on Winchester 94 .30-30 that I purchased some XS peep sites for. I am having a lot of trouble removing the front site. I am using a small gunsmithing hammer and a brass punch but it will not come off. It is actually flattening both ends of the punch.
What is the secret? The site instructions just say to use a punch to remove it.

I no longer allow myself around my guns with a hammer and punch. Bad things have happened which I don't care to re-live. :(
You really need one of these to do it right, despite what the instructions are telling you:

Glenn,
Get two sockets (one small and one large) and a C clamp. Place the small one against the sight blade base, but not against the sight base. Place the large one against the sight base, but not against the sight blade base. Squeeze together with the C clamp. The sight blade will slide out of the sight base. Be careful with a hammer. The sight base is silver sodered to the barrel. I learned this from a gunsmith and it worked fine when I had to replace the front sight blade on my 94. Good luck.

There's a chance the sight was Loctited. Look for a red or blue plastic around the dovetail. If there's Loctite, heat with a propane torch until water drops sizzle off the sight base, then tap it out.

Be sure that you are backing the barrel against a solid support. Any "bounce" will cause problems. Also, be sure you are going out from left to right, as looking from the rear.
