Hey guys and gals

I am very intrigued by the new Savage model 12 Long Range Precision Varminter. I went to a local dealer to inquire of this new cannon in a 22-250 and he wasn't much help. The only thing he could tell was the price and you could order the gun with a choice of three different barrell twists 1 and 7, 1 and 9, and 1 and 12. I was wondering if anyone could inform of what barrell i should order to shoot 45 and 55 grain bulletts, and do they have to molly coated bulletts or any info that could help me out. I looked at them on the savage web site and all they said about 22-250 was 1 and 12 twist. Well I appreciate the help and look for a reply

Welcome to the forum .270. Rules are simple, be nice and join in. As for the twist question the standard twist for 45 thru 55 grains bullets is 1 in 12. The faster twist is designed for stabalizing heavier bullets in the 65 and up weight range.

You might also take a look at the new 204 Ruger cartridge. Shoots as flat as the 22-250 with less powder and is very very accurate. Mine is shooting sub 1/2 inch groups and you can see your hits in the scope.

I don't shoot a savage, here's the CZ Varmit I have and a couple of groups, it wears an old Japanese Tasco 8 by 32 target scope. Both groups are five shots even though one doesn't look like it. Two bullets in almost one hole.

This a fun gun to shoot and not near as heavy as a heavy bbl varmiter. I also have a Rem 700 VLS 26 inch heavy bbl in 243 and the little 25.5 inch barreled CZ is woods packable and stil offers extreme accuracy.

Just wanted to let you know that if have ordered a new rifle and it is the Savage 12FLV left handed model.
After requesting information off the forum and checking some other sources I picked the 204 ruger for the reasons that faucettb suggests.

270 man,

I'm interested in buying a Savage rifle also...a 10FP in 223 for precision matches.

After looking on Savage's website....I can't find where the LRPV has a choice of barrel twists. The 223 is still only available with a 9...even in this model. And I believe the '250 is only available in a 12 twist.

Please correct me if I'm wrong...cause if I am...I'm ordering a LRPV tomorrow in a 7 twist 223. But if I'm right....the shop owner should be corrected.

Safe shooting.....SG

Buy The T3 And Don't Waste Your Money.

Welcome to the forum James. Rules are simple, be nice and join in. Three posts to answer one question is beginning to work on the edge of the rules.

What Rules????

James being nice is not posting over and over on a single thread. Your tikka is a nice gun and shoots well, but lots of other guns do also.

Please stop with the multiple posts.

I think the 1-9" twist is a great compromise, as it will stablise a 70 gr bullet as well as a 50 gr. The only problem I've had with mine was some Sierra 50 gr blitz bullets that would blow up due to too high rotational speed. About half of them made it to the target and the other half would turn into a blue puff of smoke around 20 yards down range. The ones that survived made tiny little groups,I could have slowed them down a bit and they would have likely shot quiet well.

I just picked up a Model 12 lrpv two weeks ago. Mine has the 1 and 9 inch twist in 22-250. So far i've found that hornady 55 grain ballistic tips shoot extremely accurate (less than 1/4 inch, 3 shots 100 yards) and havn't had any problems with bullets coming apart. I havn't messed with 45 grain bullets, but like i said earlier, 55's do the trick. The rifle itself is a ton of fun! the trigger has ZERO creep and breaks clean, and is easy to adjust. I wasn't sure how great the left side ejection would be but it does make it really simple to reload from the bench. Hope that helps
