I purchased this rifle several years ago for my Dad as a ranch rifle but he never fired it.

I have never owned a lever rifle and know absolutely nothing about them having been a long distance bolt gun guy all my life.

I am thinking about using it as a brush gun and to let my son start using it as a deer rifle, but am having trouble figuring out how to change/set windage and obviously the elevation is notched so is very rough/course.

I would like to zero it at 50 - 75 yards and then use hold-overs etc to hunt.

The rifle is in very good conditions (Probably 90%+) but would like some info on how to field strip it for cleaning, again how to site the rifle in, also was wondering what it was worth, seriel # 5269XXX.

Is there a manual, guide etc that I can purchase for this rifle?

Thanks

Why don't you put on one of the little Williams reciever sights for you boy. It's much easier to use and adjust.

What is a Williams receiver sight?

The front site moves opposite of impact. If you move the front sight right, impactmoves left.

The rear sight moves the same direction as impact.

If you just can't get one of the steps to work. you could file one down just a smidgen. Go easy! Touch up blue it.

A receiver site is a site that screws onto the receiver of the rifle. With the ae, I believe, the receive is drilled and tapped just infront and on top just forward of the locking bolt. It is a peep sight that has very good adjustability and will run ~$75.

The Williams sight works quite well and it is easy enough to mount. You can get them from most anyone, including the factory, Cabalas, Midway, etc.
Here's a little hint though. Adjust the vertical first, and once that is correct, then do the windage. It is just easier that way, and a whole lot less frustrating.

I don't have an ae in front of me, but on the 1970's rear sights, there are a couple teeny tiny screws, which it is my understanding can be loosened to allow the center of the rear sight to move up or down, assumably less than the step in the elevator? The one I'm playing with currently has group sizes almost equal to an elevator step at 50 yards, so I haven't got to the "fine tuning" stage yet.
