Didn't want to bird-dog Catch's "copper in the bore" thread so I'm starting a new one for this rat hole.

My old DCM Garand's barrel would foul so badly that after just ten rounds it required six patches of Iosso Bore Cleaner (soft abrasive, like JB). . .

After firelapping, two patches of Kroil followed by 10 strokes with one patch of Iosso, followed by two patches of gun oil, and it was done!

Nick, what did you do with the gas cylinder & op rod when you firelapped your M1? I have held off on firelapping mine for fear of damaging the gas cylinder and piston from lapping compound getting into the gas cylinder.

I thought of taking off the gas cylinder and op rod and just letting the lapping compound spit out of the gas port, but didn't like the idea of firing the rifle, even with light loads, without the recoil spring holding the bolt cammed into lock. I know the spring isn't what locks the action on firing, but I also know that the bolt will cam open easily without the spring in place, and Murphy is alive and well. . . not to mention wondering where the lapping bullet will go without a front sight.

Also, congratulations on the drawings you made for the reverend father -- excellent!

Thanks,

The Old Guy
