I grew up in south central PA and 40 years ago there were lots of running deer shoots at different clubs. There aren't near as many anymore. JB's Club has a great running deer shoot and there 's another one fairly close. Near my hunting camp in North Central PA before deer season the one club has a "Turkey Shoot" You shoot at medium Eggs suspended on string offhand at 80yds. One Dollar a shot, hit the egg and you win a turkey. With shotguns , block shoots are still popular in our area and when I was a kid the block shoot I enjoyed the most was shooting a thrown block with an x on both sides. I just thought it would be interesting to hear what other kind of fun shoots people are doing around the country.

Mike,
In June we are meeting up from all over the country for a week of camping, shooting and sight seeing in Wyoming. I think the big event (other than having the privilege of meeting me :p ) will be a 1000 yd White Buffalo shoot. Most of the folks that will be attending are at MarlinOwners and Levergunluvers.
It is so far that I won't be pulling my 5-th wheel but will just reserve a pop-up in one of the neighboring towns.
It should be a great week!!

Use to shoot a lot with a shotgun…meat , prizes and small money shoots on the west coast…Annie Oakley’s from station 4 skeet but back on the 26yd trap pad, then as the night wore on, backing all the way to the 34yd line, which was just out of the clubhouse doors. Long nights but a lot of fun…
Then of coarse the queen mother of all shotgun games- lives pigeons…If you ever get chance, just do it :D …Around here its by invite only…Harold’s Club and PJ’S in Reno use to hold small shoots, still cost-a-lota green to enter but were great fun…
For those that are familiar with the area, the first pigeon ring I ever shot at was located in the Whittier Hills, in the heart of East LA…

Rowdy,
We used to have an annual pigeon shoot near where I live but the protesters managed to shut it down. It took a few years but they chipped away and the club finally gave in. It was held every year on Labor Day and was a great family event in a town park. I was never a participant though because my games are played with rifles & handguns.
As I understand there are still some live bird shoots nearby but now it's very discreet.
And like Mike Buchanan, I miss the running deer shoots. We used to shoot all summer with rifles and handguns. Best practice a man can get on moving targets. Another shoot that stopped is the live turkey shoot. Shooting was at a turkeys head at 100 yds. using a 22 rimfire rifle. If you hit the head the bird was yours. These days most turkey shoots are with shotguns, hoping to put a pellet through the intersection of two lines drawn on a card, closest wins a certificate for a turkey.
Hey Mike, where are those egg shoots near your camp? I have shot a few times at Tiadaghton near Waterville and I know of another club above Morris but have never been there. I spent a lot of time tent camping along Pine Creek above Blackwell so I was surprised to see that you have a camp there. I haven't been back since the railroad tracks were removed. I imagine it's busier than ever nowadays.

Morris Rod and Gun Club, I missed the mountains this year because of the heart problem but my cousin and uncle discovered the shoot this year and had a ball. They said they 've been doing it for awhile on the Sunday before the opener to raise money. Apparently that white egg out there at 80 yds looks pretty doable to most people until they try it and get more and more determined to get it. My cousin and uncle said they're taking extra ammo next year.
When I was a kid, we had access to a farm that had a nice steep hollow in it. We would take old tires and put cardboard in the centers. One guy would roll two tires, one after the other down thru the hollow and the other guy would try to get as many holes in them as possible. Then you'd trade and drag the tires to the top and roll them for your buddy. What fun and good practice! Around here now I wouldn't know where to do something like that.
The other great rifle practice when I was a kid was shooting rats at the dumps which don't exist anymore with .22's.
I'm feeling more and more like a dinosaur! :(

I hope it's a really really big White Buffalo you're shooting at!
Sounds like fun but then what doesn't that involves shooting?

Mike,
I think it will be a 55 gallon drum. Maybe I should make a to scale wooden one to carry up there. ;)

If you hit it do you win a turkey or buffalo steaks or burgers?
Either way that sounds like a heart healthy shoot, good exercise checking the target and low fat prizes! :D

One of the best things about the running deer shoots at JB's club is the Hot dogs, Hot sausages, fries and the Homemade pies & cakes, not heartsmart but hmmm good!
At my Muzzleloading club we shoot. All kind of stuff off hand. We split the ball on an ax and break clay pigions on each side. cut X strings on a frame . shoot life savers on strings, split cards, shoot paint balls on golf tees. at 15 to 20 yards. at 50 yards char coal brickettes tide on strings, eggs, potatoes, small balloons tied on strings blowing in the wind, We also have a running elk target made out of ply wood with a water balloon tied behind the shoulder on the back of the target so you can't see it. It is on a cable with pullies and running down hill. At longer ranges we shoot Silhouettes and bells made out of cut up oxygen tanks.

At my muzzy group, offhand is all we are allowed to do. Our Range has some weird rules and some weirder people running it.

At Roseto Rod and Gun Club in PA we have block shoots, .... 3 5-shot round offhand shoots @ 100 yds,....
1 shot/ round closest to the dead center bull @ 50yds with 22 rimfire,.....
and the mother of all shoots is the 1 round 5-shot offhand @ 100yds combined with 1 round of 5 shots @ 25 yds offhand pistol combined with 5 shots skeet @10 pts / bird hit.
Good shootin'
