This might not be the right place to ask this question, but here goes anyway:

I have a 30/30 Handi-Rifle that I can't seem to get completely clean. I've used a variety of solvents and nylon and brass brushes on the bore. The patches indicate that the bore is clean, but when I run a patch laced with JB Bore Cleaning Compound through the bore, the patch comes out black with carbon fouling. I've then followed the directions on the container and have continued to run patches through the bore with the compound, and they continue to be carbon fouled. Am I never going to get rid of all the carbon?

JB compound turns black without any carbon present. Rub some on a highly polished piece of steel and you'll see. Generally, at laest in my experience, 3-4 patches will get the carbon out. Some of the real barrel burners may need more.

Yup, JB's is not a good indicator of carbon fouling, though it's great stuff for the bore. Bench rest shooters been using it for years.

No, not that way.

As Jack and Bob have said, JB's rubbed on steel turns black, even on clean steel. I use brake cleaner in a spray can. Buy it at any auto parts store. Hold the gun muzzle pointed down over a bucket and spray down the barrel thru the chamber for a second or two followed by a clean patch. repeat until clean and oil as usual. Done. This cleans the JB's out of the barrel and leaves it shiney.

Mr. Bledsoe,

Thanks for the advise. I'll try it as soon as I can.

Before becoming a member of this forum, I thought I knew quite a bit about guns, handloading, and shooting, but reading these posts is certainly humbling.
