I have a 1954 Savage 99 in 300 Savage.
Could that be rechambered to 308 Win?
Rebored to 358 Win?
Just wondering.
Thanks

Doable, but you need a new magazine in addition to the barrel work, or ream out the existing one for the new cartridges....

Unless your rifle bore is wore out it's probably worth more money than if you had it rechambered/rebored. You might consider looking for a Savage already in the caliber you want, they are around. I'd bet the cost would be close to the same.

Actually it isn't doable, they reworked the reciever of the 99 in 56 to accept the 308 cartridge, the recievers before are a tad shorter. No can do. As faucettb said find one in 308. Plus it is a real joy trying to get the rotor reamed to fit. On the later ones(after 56) the rotor for the 300 and 308 are the same, 250 and 243 are the same. Les

Rebore and chamber to .35 rem that is doable in a rotary mag.

Thanks for the info/education on these Rifles. I think I'm going to clean it up some. shoot it and keep my eye out for a 308.

i have both 300 and 308 and can you really tell the difference in their usefullness in real world ballistics. i know on paper they are different. why ruin a perfectly good gun to make something that is virtually the same. my 300 has a 22" and my 308 has a 20" and on the chrono the 300 is superior. if you want a 308 buy one and dont ruin a possible collector

I certainly agree Duane, I own several 99's and my 300 will do everything my 308 will.

After listnening and learning from you all I agree. The 300 Savage is a good round as is pretty much equal to the 308 in these rifles.
