I am wanting to purchase a .17HMR rifle.
I have my eye on both a Marlin 917V or a Savge package with scope model 93R17-GVXP.
Does anyone have any opinions?

I have a Marlin 917V with a BSA Sweet 17 4X scope. It is a pretty good rifle right out of the box.
I have several friends who have the Savage rifle. The Savage rifle required a trigger job immediatly where I could live with the Matrlin trigger as it came from the factory. this is the only real difference I can see between the two rifles. With a trigger job the Savage will shoot very well. Most folks choose higher magnification than I do but I like to walk around with my rifle and I do not use a bipod. I have noticed bipods are pertty popular with the .17HRM shooters..
I'm in the same position. I did own a Marlin 917VS and it was amazingly accurate. Had it sighted-in at 100 yards and the rounds stayed within a nickel diameter. Sometimes tighter. The scope was a 3x9x40 Burris. But, I wanted a custom built auto handgun and traded it away. DUMB move. Anyway, I've been researching the 17 HMR rifle and here are some models, in no particular order, that seem to be the most accurate and popular.
CZ 452 American, 22 1/2" barrel, wood stock
CZ 452 Varmint, 21" heavy barrel, wood stock
Marlin 917VS, 22" bull barrel, grey stock
Marlin 917VSF, 22" fluted barrel, grey stock
Savage 93R17-BVSS, 21" barrel, grey stock
Savage 93R17-GV, 21" barrel, wood stock
Good luck to the both of us.
Ruger makes a dandy 77/22 in the .17HMR. Looks and feels just like a downscaled M77 with nice wood and checkering.

I have the Savage 93R17 FVSS which is the heavy barrel stainless synthetic stock with accu-trigger. I took one loop off of the trigger spring and the trigger is really nice for me. I put a Mueller APV 4-14X40AO scope on the rifle and it is a real joy to shoot and very accurate.
My son just received a new Ruger 77/17 today. This one is a the 22" blue barrel with synthetic stock. I expect we will be putting an aftermarket trigger in the gun. It will wear the Mueller APV, as well.

Have the Savage model 93R17 also. Yes it needs a trigger, but w/ the factory trigger is still very accurate. Interested in the spring job there retiredsquid. Had a 3 x 9 power on it until a few weeks ago. Got the BSA Sweet 17 6 x 18. Off the bench. Wow! . . .Wow!
