Hi guys,

This would be my first rifle. I would like to practice with something small first before I move on to the big boys (probably a 308 Remington 700). I am thinking about the Remington Model 5. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance

I've found the CZ 452 or 453 with the set trigger to be about the nicest quality 22's on the market for the money today. I have a 452 Lux and on a day with no wind it will group an inch or near there at a hundred yards.

Here's a pix of mine. It wears a Weaver 2.5 to 10 classic scope and is as accurate or darn near as my old 52 Winchester target rifle was.

Excellet choice; knowing you're going to eventaully get a bolt action centerfire, it makes sense to have a good quaility bolt action rimfire.

Most of us would probably by the CZ...great guns, great price....but if the rem. was your choice, it's a good one.

I agree 100%! You can't beat a CZ for value for the money spent.

I've got the 453 with the single set trigger. Put a 4-12 Burris Compact scope on it. Outstanding rifle and every bit as accurate as the 1416D Anschutz I used to have and for a LOT less money.

Each of these are 5 shot goups.

I've heard a lot of good on the CZ's and I'll bet you can't go wrong there. I'm not familiar with the Rem Mod 5, nor in how much either of these go for - anyone know approximate number$ here?

You might look into CDNN Sports, and the Charles Daly Zastava 22 LR (may be called something different now). I do have one of these, and two friends have them as well, and they are great shooters, and easy on the wallet. Last time I bought, they were less than $150. They are clip-fed, so you might want to think about if you prefer this over tube fed or not.

I see that Browning reintroduced the T-bolt 22, and this is a fine piece of work. My dad had one when I was growing up, and it still shoots great! This is a straight-pull bolt, clip-fed. Might want to take a look at that as well.

I like the Ruger 77/22 rifles. I owned one in .22 LR and have one now in 22 magnum both shot/shoot very well. I really like the Ruger rotary magazines.

Thanks for the input guys. I just find out something interesting. They mysterious Rem model 5 is the the Charles Daly Zastava. This is what is written in the Charles Daly newsletter:

Zastava has decided to join with Remington Arms for now, so in the very near future you should be able to purchase Mauser (Remington Model 798), Mini-Mauser (Remington Model 799) and Zastava rimfire rifles (Remington Model Five) for approximately 10% more than you were paying for the Charles Daly brand.

Thanks for the info Toshi - interesting that the Rem Mod 5 is the Charles Daly! Take a look at the link here at the Charles Daly Superior II http://cdnn.powerfulhosting.com/objects/5105.itml/icOid/5105. The one I got at a local gun shop was $189 I believe (about 2 years ago), and has absolutely beautiful "tiger-stripe" walnut. Two I ordered last year from CDNN through the same gun shop came with nice little 4x Simmons scopes, and with FFL fee, were around $155 each. The stocks weren't as nice, but the rifle is the same, good value IMO. The stock finish is a bit rough (some sanding marks, and what you wouldn't call "fine" checkering), but the trigger is nice. They must be popular because they now list for $325! If you get one, they're fairly gunked up, so give it a good cleaning.
