Generally, go with light weight (less stress on the rings/bases), and long eye relief (less stress on your forehead from the scope bouncing off of it if you get too close  )
I'd go with a Leupold 2x7, either standard or compact, on a Weaver 63B base and Weaver Quad-Lock rings.
Welcome to the forum, and good luck with your project.

Have a look at a burris fullfield in a fixed power 2.5 x It has great eye relief about 50'+ field of view and all the magnification you'll need for your 45/70. I would use quick release rings to have easy access to my iron sights as well. Scope weight around 9 oz but it's plenty tough

get a Leupold VXIII 1.5 - 6 super clear, super bright , light weight , not to large , a superior scope that will take anything you can dish out

Leupold VX-II 1-4x20mm
Don't really need 6x with a Marlin 1895G 45-70 as it is at most perhaps a 250 yards proposition. The Leupold VX-II 2-7x33mm could be a secondary consideration.

I agree with jackfish. The Leupold VX-II 1-4x20mm would be a great choice for your gun. Light and compact with all the power you will ever need.

I once had a 1 x 4 x 20mm Leupold scope on my 444 Marlin but I found that early in the morning or later in afternoon, sun going down, I myself could not see as well. I wish I could see well enough to just use the iron sights!
I took the scope off the rifle and replaced it with a Leupold rifle scope in a 2 x 7 x 33mm Leupold "Shotgun Scope" with heavy reticule. It does not get lost in the tangles or low light. It just simply leave it set at 2 power most of the time, unless I need more magnification on target.

Bushnell Model # 71-143 (1.75 - 4 X 32). Bright, clear to the edge of the lens. Advertised eye relief is 6 inches. It's actually more like 5 - 8 inches at 4X. Handles the 1895G recoil (so far). $90 @ Cabela's.
Mounted on Warne QD Rings (~$50) and the XS Scout rail (~$50).
Iron sights are the XS Ghost Rings ($120).
