What pistol do you count on to protect your family at your house? I have a S.W. .357 with 158 hollow points at my night stand. I feel I can shoot this half asleep. On my wife's side of the bed is a Ruger auto .22 with a bull barrel. She can shoot this gun an not be afraid of it. What do you trust with your family life?

I remember being asked this before! I 'think" my answer was
"whatever I had with me? If it wasen't, It should have been!

I like a 12 gauge for "gunfights". Prefer a revolver to an auto-loader with handguns. I don't care to get hit with a .22. (would hurt).

Protect your family as "best you can , with what you've got".

I actually have 3. All 3 are S&W revolvers. I have a Model 67 .38, a Model 60 .357 magnum, and a Model 629 Classic .44 magnum. The .44 is not the best choice but I do keep it loaded because there have been bears that took a dump about 10 feet from my front door. The model 60 is actually the Ladysmith model and it is a great carry gun. These are all great revolvers and a completely reliable.

I don't have a loaded gun in the house. All ammo is locked away seperate. I could not get to a gun for protection if I tried. I guess the mentality of the open house for the kids and friends has carried over into my allmost all kids gone and old phase.

May have to put the Rem pump in the corner tonight!

Out here,we have to be able to jump up in the middle of the night to protect livestock outside as well as family inside th home. The S&W .357 Mag. under the pillow, 9MM Makorav under bed, AK 47 leans against bedpost, Panther Arms M4 on bi-pod w/ bayonet sleeps beside me. Hanging from headboard is the Colt Single 1873 in .45 Long. Because of the environment, a single pistol is'nt practical. Outside security systems, and confusing interior also help protect home. But I'm really not paranoid either.

Living in North Dakota, no loaded guns and the house only gets locked when we go on vacation. I do, however, have a very protective Gordon setter sleeping at the foot of my bed.

Here in OZ guns have to be locked away by law, but years ago when things were different I had a winchester 9422 and a single barrel shotgun hanging on the wall above the bed. They were easy to get to there, and besides it was a farm cabin built at the turn of last century and they looked right there. They weren't for protection but they were handy for ferals that disturbed the horses in the night.

And I love the sound of North Dakota, reminds me of the pleasant life we used to have a few decades ago.

Slim, there are more answers to that question than could possibly addressed here. Good manufacturers include Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Colt, and many others. Also, will you want it for a house gun, or do you intend to carry it concealed?
If you do not need to buy it for that class, ask the instructor for a short list of recommendations. He can probably also suggest a store that will be ohf help.

Hit a few gunshops and see what they have under the counter. Used .357s would be a good start. Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Taurus.... those are brands of revolvers I've messed with. Ask the gunshops if they can get any police trade-ins for a good price. .38 Special too - those may be a bit cheaper.

Best of luck.

I no longer keep a pistol in the night stand in our masterbed room. Instead I keep a Mossberg model 590 pump shotgun in 12 ga next to the bed, loaded up with 2 shots of #5's, 2 shot's #4's and the rest are Tripple OOO BUCK.

I also keep a hidden wheel gun in the living room and one in at the front door clothes closet. Another in the basement hideout spot. Wife keeps her "Airweight .357" Smith & Wesson in her nightstand by the bed, it is loaded up with +P ammo.

If we wait for the police, a mid-night call would bring them at 2 in the morning. So like many area's of the USA, be on your guard and protect yourself first and foremost. ;)

You got 158's in your 357? I think that is to much for inside the house. 158 gr loads will penetrate alot of walls ect. You may want to consider 125 or 110gr or glasers for inside the house. Glaser has a 38special load that might work too. there is some discussion on IF Glasers work at all. Im not sure how I feel bout them in 357 I have them in 45 Kimber Pro Carry 45 acp Grey tip with larger shot.

The same one I use to protect when out and about. My Every Day Carry, My GLOCK 30 with Lasermax. And just yesterday I put a fully adjustable rear sight from MidwayUSA on it. While on the nightstand, I keep a Scherer 27 round mag in it, and an Insight X2 light on it. I'm wanting to try to trade up towards a different light, most likely the TLR-1. Every now and then, I'll keep my Rock Island 1911 or my Taurus 617 or my Ruger Redhawk .44 Mag loaded while I'm at the computer. But the G30 is always there too.

Chief,

I'm in the same position as you. However, I've found a solution. I bought one of those spring-open lock boxes and mounted it in a strategic location. I've timed myself from under my covers, and with the push button keypads, I can have a GLock 23 in my hands in a little over 10 seconds. It is an awesome solution.

If you want the make and model number, send me a pm. I think the whole thing was like $80.00. It mounts real tight and might even be a little fireproof too. I'd need to check on that.

Any reliable hand gun will do 38/9 m/m up preferred. I have been trained and cross trained in the military and LE so much it don't really matter. :)
How ever I do have my preferences! ;)
There is NO excuse for not having immediate access to a 'loaded' gun. There are many ways to accomplish this in a SAFE manner.
The two most worthless things in this world are;
1. An unloaded gun.
2. A dull knife. ;)

Having lived in the City of New Orleans right after the wife and I were married, ( only for 6 or 7 months, till we moved back out to the subburbs) I learned that the best weapons are those with as little gadgits on them as possible, such as revolvers and, my choice; 2 Glocks- Model 22 for myself, loaded with 155 gr. Corbons, and a Model 23 for the wife, and concealed carry, loaded with Federal Hydra-Shocks. Believe me, when you have to pull one at that vital moment, you don't want to deal with safties....Just TRIGGER AND FRONT SIGHT !!!

Well....I shoot a lot of different things..mostly 1911s but recently I purchased something very different for home defense..and I love it.....I bought a stainless Taurus wheel gun in .45 ACP. It is well balanced, shoots well, has a great trigger and has no potential for a magazine failure or stove pipe at a critical moment. It is big enough that if I have retreated and cannot avoid a conflict...it will end it quickly. Gold Dots in moon the moon clip will immediately halt the argument and there is no issue about what ammo I used.
