Anyone have one of these in 357 mag? I just picked up a 200th year model. It shoots about 18 inches high at 25 yards with 158, 180 and 158 38 spl. How high is your front sight? Havent tried the light weight bullets yet.

I don't have one, but have shot them without that problem. Kuhnhausen says the sight blades are available in .240, .266, and .281 inch heights (height of the thin blade above the top of its slot.) The highest blade, however, is standard and should produce the lowest point of impact.
A friend of mine recently bought a Ruger short-barreled Redhawk in .454 Cassul. It also shoots too high, even with the rear sight run all the way down. I would simply call Ruger and mail the gun to them with your complaint. They will fix it free. The last time I sent them a handgun they turned it around in about three weeks, though you can ask them their current turnaround tme? Get instructions from them on what carrier to use and how? You do not need to go through an FFL holder to return a gun to the factory or to have it returned directly to you. Factory repairs have an exception under the GCA '68 law.
P.S. The reason I recommend factory service is, a gun shooting that high might have a barrel shoulder or frame not machined square to the barrel threads. The factory can fix that fast. You didn't say how the gun groups? If it doesn't group well, mention that to Ruger, too. It is another sign of a frame fit issue. The last time I complained to them about accuracy, they reamed the cylinders and returned the gun shooting really, really well. Also, free. They get too few shooters who know the difference to make the average gun that tight, but really strive to make you happy if you can shoot well enough to know the difference.

Nick: great info, thanks. My sight blade measures .250 above the rib. Millet sights makes a sight blade and they said theirs is .325 high. I havent really shot it much yet, only test fired a little. Im probably going out tomorrow and will check groups then but I think you are right about the groups. They didnt look too good in my quick test. You think Ruger will fix a gun made in 1976 under warrantee? Its possible the stock grips were effecting my groups as I found my middle finger getting hit with the 158 gr factory 357 loads and my 187 gr wfngc loads at about 1100 fps from a 4 in. Ive since put on a set of Hogue grips that should be more comfortable. I did fire one group with only the tip of the front sight in the groove but it still shot 6 in high.

Take a look at this (http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/PS-ServiceFees.html#). What Ruger will do is look at the gun and decide whether its probelem is their fault or not? If it is, they will fix it free. If it isn't, they'll charge you based on their labor schedule.
Check your groups. Make sure the gun is clean and free of all leading. I would group it with jacketed bullets first, because if there is a constriction of the barrel where it screws into the frame (common revolver issue, especially pre-1990's) the lead bullets will be much more sensitive to that. Slug the barrel to check for the problem.

My shooting instructor, (retired military instructor ) suggested I hold on the belt buckle and expect mid-chest impact. It gives a better picture of what your target is doing, but it won't help you win any bulls eye competition.
For target shooting I have a Mk II Gov. Competitioin.

Just got back from the range. Shot some 125 gr Remingtion 357 full loads, +P 38 110 grain, +P+ 110 38 loads at 25 yards. All hit at the correct elevation. I gues the gun was set up for the light bullets. The Hogue grips also are more comfortable and I managed 2 inch groups with all the above ammo from the sandbags. Since I want to use the Beartooth 185 load I guess Ill have to get a higher front sight. Thanks to all that responded. Ill give a report on what I have to do to get the BTB load zeroed.

The Federal 125 grain .357 HP used to be the law enforcement gold standard in revolvers. That is very likely, indeed, to have been what it was sighted for. Still, I would not have expected a 158 to be 18" high from that sight picture. Seems like a lot. I suspect you had better get some of Marshall's bullets and develop the load and see how high they hit before you choose a sight blade.
