Has anyone chronographed factory ammo out of a Marlin 1894p? I'll be moving back to the 'Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave' soon and would like to get an idea of what typlical factory loads will do in the little 1894p. Despite trips 'home' every hunting season, my trigger finger has sure gotten itchy after a few years living in England. If this information is already in a previous post, I'd be grateful for a link (I've not been too successful in my searches!). Thanks. . .

Am sure it's in the archives, but will try to help.
Small cases running at moderate pressures lose less in short barrels than large cases running at high pressures. One good run of thumb is that the vel. loss with be something close to 1/2 the PERCENT of barrel length change. For a low volume/low pressure cartridge, it maight be closer to 1/4 the percent of length change....for a high pressure cartridge, it might be closer to 3/4 of the percentage of change.
Seems like we could do away with the math and just state some number in feet-per-second, but it's not quite that easy. Going from a 16" barrel to a 20" makes that 4" a much higher percentage than going from a 22" to a 26" barrel.
Are a lot of variable..some powders are slower burning and do better in a long barrel...others are fast burning and do better in handguns...if using factory loads, we've no clue what powder was used.
But in general the 1/2 the perentage of barrel length changes works out pretty close.
