I went hunting coyotes last sunday. At 9:30am I made my first call, I used a fawn bleat call followed by a rabbit in distress call. Both calls were made with a mouth caller. After about 30 seconds A big yellow dog came running hard in my direction. I freaked because of the speed of the coyote and shot. I made a bad shot that produced hair and some blood. The dog ran a 1/2 mile from where I shot him. Does anyone have a sure fire way of calling coyotes? what do you use as a caller?Q

When the dogs are running in straight toward me, its hard to get on them. Full camo and wind directions are critical. Lately, I've been using a little critter that moves around on a swivel set up about 50 yards away.
The sole purpose is direct the varmint toward the movement of the decoy once he is close enough to see it.
It allows me to move into shooting position and buys me a little more time. Also, I've never had a dog charge in to grab the furry critter, they always slow up and stalk it the last 30-50 yards are so.
I dont always hunt with the critter but it does work. Also, I don't start out making as much noise with the call as I do toward the end of my session at one location. Sometimes, especially with cats, you can scare them away with too much calling.
I called in a big mature cat 2 weeks ago, and actually called very little. Just enough so that the cat knew the rabbit was there. I think he waited in the bushes until it started getting darker then he came out and exposed himself. It was a big'un and I'm having it mounted.
I always use mouth calls. Its just more enjoyable to me than the electronics, I carry too much stuff with me as it is.
Calling is a lot of fun. There's something different everytime.
Good Luck

I went out calling with by brother this Sunday and it was -15 when we left home. I was using my distress hand call and went for only 30 minutes and had to stop because the reeds froze solid and there was a 1/4" ring of ice and frost around the end of the call.
We took it as a sign from God to head home.

I have learned on thing about Coys and that is they are very unpredictable. We have pucharsed some remote calls and they have increased or sucess, hand calls are great but they let the animal zone in on you too quickly. We hunt them like we hunt srping gobbler using as much stealth as possible and total camo even on the guns. There are some Coys out there that are almost uncallable because of blown set ups so we move after 15 mins of calling and usally have three or four areas we will visit . Try setting up with the wind blowing from left to right or viceversa, instead of hunting into the wind. Pay attention to your down wind side because this is where the big ones will come from.. Have fun ,be safe and burn some powder. Hard Cast,

I am in the process of building a caller. One of my buds showed this site http://www.varmintal.net/coy5-20.htm If you scroll down he gives good instructions on building a caller and also has free call downloads. I also have been using an Aries Defender nightscope mounted on my AR-15 over a couple of old gut/bone piles that were left after deer season. Lost two house cats and a good rabbit beagle to those bastards so I stopped playing fair. Durn things are outta control.

My wife just uses her corn pile. She shot her first rack buck and the next morning a coyote came in and was eating corn, she shot him too.

Do you plan on using an MP3 player, and if so what are you using for an amplifier?

Q-harley, it doesn't sound like your calling is that bad, if you got one to come in within 30 seconds I would say just try again. It sure is fun when they come on the dead run, but it's much easier when they hang up at about 100 yards.

I was unable to hear the calls, not good with the computer and I have a sick mouse.
I have called coyotes with a rabbit sound I make sucking air through my teeth

I try to set up in places where I can see a long way. Last sunday I hunted in thick brush.I went hunting tonight with no luck. I have a friend who wants to tie up a chicken and start calling.Sounds like a good idea if he brings the chicken. ;) I might try to borrow one, 2 chickens might work better. :) Q

Most likely they will circle downwind to find out what you are, before getting closer.

I was gonna head down to the local Radioshack and poke around cant be more then like 10-15 bucks for a small amp. I have an small inexpensive MP-3 player that I plan on using dont want to be leaving the nice IPOD thingie sitting in the weeds

I'm kinda "ol school" on this but I still use a set up I've had for years.
I carry an old tackle box with me that holds a casette car tape deck,( $20) 12V ni-cad battery($10) and a 10 watt all weather external speaker ($20), and of course all of my calls. I can set the speaker up about 40 yards away if needed, or just turn it on, walk away and take a stand. Works good and its cheap.
Good luck

tpv, Do you let the thing run and run. I hunted this morning with a buddy that has a electronic caller. He calls for about 1-5 minutes at a time. We had an animal come in behind us and run away before we could shoot. Have you ever called in a coyote that was yipping and howling? We tryed ...with no luck. We ended our hunt on a river bottom shooting armadillos. Killed two. Q ;)

I leave the thing turned on, they are rechargeable batteries and I carry a spare. BUt on the tapes that I use, there are long pauses with no calling, one minute or two in between calls.
I try to think like a coyote and not let them get too much of a fix on my position by calling too much with a mouth blown or
use a tape with a constant call. Best to make your own. Any CB or two-way radio shop will sell you a used speaker. They are very loud. I've had mine for about 20 years.
Most of my varmint hunting is with a mouth blown call because I'm usually pig hunting as well and just carry the calls with me. But for variety, I like to use the battery and the moving critter. This is a good time of year to go after them.
its been a hard winter down here and they are hungrey
Good Luck
